I bought a chocolate cake mix from the store and added in some coffee to the mix...baked...and then made the ganache. Its so shiny and beautiful! Taste wise I was not a big fan but I can judge fairly because I store bought the mix. I don't think I would try the actual recipe though.

My husband is in love with these cupcakes! He is not a fan of a sweet frosting, so this was just perfect. He said "honey I am sorry, but I might finish these before the family gets here! I love it, the frosting is so rich... I know mom is going to love them, too!" It doesn't get better than this.
When I saw the show, Ina used the whole jar of frosting, the recipe says use 11 0z. The only one I found at the store was 16 oz. So I watched the video and decided to go ahead and use the 16 oz. jar. I am happy with them.
    Thanks Ina

I wish I read reviews before I made these cupcakes. I LOVE Ina but this recipe had no taste at all. I only tasted Ganache and the texture of the cake was very strange. I couldn't eat them after I tasted one and had to throw away the rest....wasted money and time.

These cupcakes are so pretty to look at! The ganache is shiny and tasty! But, the cupcakes are confusing to me. I followed the directions exactly and something seems to be missing. It's not your typical sweet chocolate cupcake, which I like. Would I make them again? Probably not. Were they awful? No.

I was hesitant to try these after reading the comments. I am not a baker but have decided to try something new every week for awhile to get used to all the measuring and directions that go along with baking. These were very simple to make and very very good. I will make these over and over and may try it as a cake next.

Threw these together while watching the episode...Hershey's no longer sells the 16 oz can of syrup which the recipe on TV called for. I used a measured 16 oz (2 fluid cups of Hershey's right along with Ina. My results were so disappointing. after 35 minutes of bake time I could see that they were never going to set up. I cut into one and tossed the rest in the trash. I could kick myself for not going on-line first, reading the recipe, and using 5 less ounces of syrup. After 33 years of baking I should have known that the wet-to-dry ratio was so disproportionate. Lesson learned. Additionally, this cupcake was lacking deep chocolate flavor which could have been aided by a pinch or two of salt. I cannot recall seeing a recipe that did not include salt...neither sweet nor savory. Cannot rate recipe fairly.

The Recipe says it makes 12 cupcakes. I wanted 24 cupcakes so I doubled the recipe. To my suprise it made 24 cupcakes plus there was so much batter I also made a two nine inch cake rounds. I frosted the cakes with a butter cream frosting.
I would make this yummy cupcakes again, but I will not double it again.

Where can you buy candied violets? I called Williams Sonoma, Sur La Table, Cost Plus World Market, Whole Foods and no one had them.

In general, I love Ina and her recipes. These were not good. I successfully bake all the time and I thought these seemed suspicious . . . and my instinct was right. Followed the recipe from the show, which is different from the web. Could the 5 oz. difference in the chocolate syrup be the culprit? You said 16 oz on the show, but call for 11 oz. on line. (I had more than 12 cupcakes . . . Disappointed that I wasted my time and money. Still looking for a great chocolate cupcake recipe to take to tailgate parties. . . Not sure why others like this one. Did you really sell these at the Barefoot Contessa???
