Absolutely wonderful ... I, too, used Swiss (no Gruyere at the produce market but it's from the same family. Rather than toasting in the oven, I trimmed the bread and then put it in the toaster (and I only had 5 grain bread. I did cut salt in half -- didn't need any additional. Decadently wonderful!

my family and i really like this recipe. i'm not sure why ina rated it a medium though because it's really pretty simple to make. i subsituted the gruyere with swiss cheese because it was all i had on hand. the sandwiches turned out beautifully.

My husband LOVES grilled ham & cheese so I thought I would try this. I have not made anything from Ina that we didn't rate as a "5". Was easy, gooey, tasty & went right into My Keepsake Recipe Collection Book. Thanks!!!

We made it with turkey instead of ham (don't eat pork. Is also great topped with a fried egg (Croque Madame. I liked it without mustard as well. Great recipe!

I did alter the recipe slightly. I used 4 cups Gruyere and 1 cup Imported swiss. This cut the salty taste quite a bit. I also left out the grated Parmesan. Thats just over-kill. I also used a Sourough Frenchbread, and left the crusts on. This maintained the shaped nicely and added a little more crunch. It was excellent! Prep time was about 15 min. Not 5. Otherwise..fantastic meal.

This is very good if you like a nice sharp cheese flavor. Prep time is more than what is listed, I advise to have the cheeses grated, the milk warmed and the bread de-crusted before you start. Very good though, we'll be serving this to guests!

recently, my fiance and i went for brunch at a leading, local french restaurant and i ordered a croque. when the dried out piece of debris arrived, i sent it back....horribly disappointed. i came home and made Ina's version which is what i remembered from my trip to paris....warm, gooey and yummy. thank you ina. this is the ultimate comfort for for a cold, snowy day...a a little champagne helps too.

These sandwiches were fantastic! I made them for my husband, parents and brother and they all raved about them! They are easier than I thought to make and were really a fun lunch!
