Anyone who has had croque monsieur in Paris or elsewhere in France will tell you that there is no place for Parmesan cheese therein. This recipe, for all the good things about it, is not the least bit authentic. Low marks, Ina - you're better than this!

This sandwich looked delicious and I couldn't wait to try it. My fiance scarfed it down, but mentioned to substitute the Gruyere cheese for swiss the next time and that it was a "little salty". Two hours later, he complained of stomach pain and was in the bathroom with a "little" gastrointestinal distress! This is a very rich and salty sandwich, not for those accoustomed to regular, american and sometimes bland cooking.

I have been wanting to make this recipe for a while. I used good gruyere cheese and it was perfect. I made 1/4 of the recipe for two sandwiches. It was outrageously delicous. My husband loved it. I will try not to serve it very often because of the high fat and cholesterol content. But it is to die for. Thank you Ina.

My husband is french - and was delighted to have this one for dinner. It wasn't hard, though it takes patience to make a good French white sauce.

I have been dying to try this recipe ever since I watched the show on it. I finally got all the ingredients and forgot white bread. SO, I had to use Santa Cruz sourdough. It was still fabulous. I don't know how it would taste with regular white bread, but with sourdough, it was supurb. My husband, and roommate's son praised me several times over for this one. Thanks so much Ina! You're inspiring.

This is delicious with Salami or with using pepper jack and cheddar.
