I made this recipe exactly as written and it was fabulous! Thank you Ina. It was so good I even drove some over to my grandma (who gave me the dates while it was still warm to thank her.

Great bread. Delicious flavour. The spice level and balance is perfect. The only change I made was to macerate the dates in Frangelico (hazlenut liquor rather than Cointreau. I am not a fan of orange being too dominant.

I used some Medjool dates I picked up last time I was in Palm Springs. If you are looking for good quality dates, I buy mine from Shield's Dates in CA. They are on line, as well. They also have date sugar and date crystals. I recommend the Medjools or Barhi dates for this bread.

For those having issues with slicing the bread: chopping the dates into smaller pieces will help it stay together better. Also, use a super sharp knife, saw through the crust, then push through the crumb.

I made the cream cheese spread, which was good, but honestly, the bread didn't need it. It can stand on its own. I added a touch of lemon zest to the spread to brighten it up a bit. Good stuff.

That was pretty amazing. I also used walnuts in place of pecans, but otherwise made it exactly as the recipe says, and it was perfect. I usually adjust baking times, but with this one it was done to perfection in the stated time. Excellent!

Delicious date nut spice bread! I did not have orange liqueur on hand so I soaked the dates in water. I used walnuts instead of pecans and the bread turned out great. They are delicious as is or with the cream cheese spread. Great healthy snack! Perfect with a cup of tea or coffee!

I love all of Ina's recipes, but for some reason this one didn't work for me. I (like maybe most didn't have the orange liqueur, so I didn't add it to the recipie. Maybe that's why it wasn't a success at my house? So if you don't have the orange liqueur or any other substitutes, than DO NOT make this. It will be way to "spicy". Or, you can try StarAnise11's suggestion, and instead of cloves, add more cinnamon/vanilla?

Just finished baking this marvelous delight! The whole loaf is almost gone already among a family of 5!!! :D
I changed the recipe a tad. Since I didn't have ground cloves, I just added extra cinnamon and vanilla. I left the chopped dates soaking in Cointreau for close to an hour stirring them from time to time while i worked on the rest of the recipe. Also added cherries along with the dates and it gave it an extra touch :} I also only used the zest from only 1 orange and it seems to have worked out great regardless of whether the recipe calls for 2.
I recommend it highly. It has that fall/wintery warm treat taste. Great as a late night snack or a great way to start the morning since it seems like a dab of maple syrup or a cup of coffee will make it into a great breakfast.

Just a follow up to my previous review. I could not help myself and cut myself a slice of the bread and smeared with unsalted butter. Fabulous flavor and was moist...I baked it for 51 minutes and was cooked to perfection. However, I can see why some of you posted about the removing the liquor from the recipe. It is a tad bit overpowering and I think the next time I make this I will add just two tablespoons of it and enough orange juice to make one third cup for the dates to soak. All in all, it turned out wonderfully and my husband says the aroma baking is fab! Oh, by the way, toast the pecans before you add to batter...makes a world of difference.

Very good but very sweet. Used OJ instead of liqueur. Going to try again using coffee to soak the dates (suggestion from another recipe and maybe less sugar.
