Delia,
Try using orange juice concentrate or orange juice with orange extract. In my opinion this would work just fine. Bon appetit !
There are some helpful suggestions here:

This recipe sounds delicious but I don't want to use the liqueur. I don't have it in the house for personal family reasons. Can you tell me what I can use as a subsitute?
I would love to make this recipe!

I didn' t make this recipe yet. But I am considering making this. There was a comment by another member Chris from SC which I think I can figure out why your bread took longer. Some ovens are different and because of that, sometimes effects baking and cooking times. I know this because I've made the same recipe(not this one but in two different ovens. One took longer. I hope I was able to shed some light upon your experience.

This is a very good spice bread with dates. I have another date recipe that uses orange juice and zest that I think is better and will make it next time. This is a very moist bread, but I would prefer more orange flavor and less spice.

It was a little spicy for me. and my family. I will make the recipe again but will cut the nutmeg in half. It overpowered the bread. Many date nut breads are a little dry. However, this bread was very moist. It took longer than the 50-60 minutes to cook completely. I cooked 65 minutes or a little longer to cook all the way through to the center.

Just want to add my .02's worth - this was by far the best date bread I've made and the flavored cream cheese was the perfect accompaniment. This will be my go-to recipe for holiday gift giving. The only change from the original was that I used Grand Marnier and let the dates soak for about 3 hours.

I couldn't wait to make this bread after watching Ina's new show. My mother loves dates and I just knew she would love this bread. She did! I soaked the dates in 1/4 cup of Grand Marnier. One 8 oz box of chopped dates would work just as well. Ina's is the BEST!

...I loved loved loved this bread!! I actually had to make 2 in one week because friends and family devoured the first one! The cream cheese spread was a special added bonus-soo good. The only thing I changed was that I omitted the clove, since I don't care for it, and it was great! This recipe is a keeper!
