I have loved all of Ina Garten's recipes until I baked this pie. It has a very strange taste.

I won't bake it as long next time--- apples got mushy. The flavor was good & we enjoyed it.

Tried this recipe with my granddaughter. It was awful. The apples were mushy and it was so tart, I thought I had forgotten to add the sugar...Sorry Ina I usually love everything you make, but I do not think you tried this one or you would have fixed it before you published it...

To the other reviewers who thought the pie had an odd taste--I think it isn't the orange juice or zest. When I took my first taste of the pie, I tasted allspice, and I didn't think it was too strong. I think the recipe is great as is--good spices, good combo of flavors. This recipe is also good with a sweeter apple. I used a a combo of sweet and sweet/tart apples from a local orchard. If you are going to make this pie, choose the apple you like to eat. Granny Smith may be too tart for some.

I've watched Ina Garten for years now and usually give rave reviews to anything she creates. Sorry to say I can't say the same for this pie. There was far too much lemon juice and lemon zest in it which translated to a "lip puckering" experience. Next time I'll cut way back on the lemon components and hopefully then I'll be able to give this pie the 5 stars that it deserves.

The crust came out fantastic and the texture of the pie was superb BUT one tast and I wanted to throw it away. The taste has too much citrus zest and the nutmeg and alspice make it taste almost like a mincemeat. I will save the crust recipe and go back to the basic pie filling

Too bad I went through all the work to make this pie. My husband and I thought the filling had an off put after taste, it has to be the orange zest and juice, it almost gave it a bitter taste, and not sweet enough in our estimation. The crust is excellent, I will be using the recipe for that again, but put my own filling in it.

This is a perfect example of why I have always said that BF Contessa is way over-rated. This recipe is not unique.
-Oh, gee, besides the lemon juice and/or zest, she uses orange, also. WOW. Yawn. . . . . .
"Um, now, I'll, hmmn, take some yogurt, and, um, dollop some on a plate, and then I'll drizzle some clover honey on it. I call it, umm, Yogurt with Clover Honey. All of my friends rave about it!"
