as my husband said, this pie had a strange aftertaste. we both prefer firm, tart apple flavor as opposed to the overly sweetened and mushy pies, so i thought i would like this recipe. i did skip the zest but next time i will skip the orange juice as well. i have been making apple pie for over 20 yrs and should have known better than to try to improve on my old favorite. thought i would try something different.
i do have to say, the crust was flavorful and flaky and easy to handle. it had more flour and slightly more crisco than i normally use. i will probably stick with ina's ratio, since it yielded more pastry.
i would be interested to know if anyone liked the citrus tang. i did use fresh juice so i'm not sure where the strange flavor came from.
