To which "outrageous brownies" recipe are you referring? There are 4 listed when I did a search. Can you help clarify? Thanks! Oh! Pay no attention to the stars; you have to put in something! I haven't tried this yet, but I want to, and I'll change the buttermilk to 1-1/2 cups!

Even with the mistake Ash noted, the cake was okay. We all probably have a McCall's or Betty Crocker cookbook recipe that's right on the money. And while I love Ina's recipes for the most part, I must say--Jordan almonds for candy for kids? And arugala salad pizza? Would never fly in my house for my kids.

I read the reviews before making this cake, and increased the buttermilk to 1-1/2 cups but still found the cake dry. The frosting was good, but did not make up for the dry cake. Perhaps the Barefoot Contessa can revise the recipe.

i expected more since most of ina's recipes are amazing and 5 star.
i found the frosting not sweet enough for me and the cake a bit dry.
i even added chocolate chips tossed in flour to help.
i think i'll stick to her "outrageous brownies" for the
    best chocolate dessert ever.

I took your suggestions with the 1 1/2 cups of buttermilk and it works great. The frosting is wonderful and I think I had it once before with a few variations on Betty's Chocolate cake with butter frosting also made by Ida. I am not sure there was enough butter in it. I would have added a full stick instead of 1/2 stick.

They made a mistake in the directions I just watched the episode it said 1 1/2 cups of buttermilk not 1/2 a cup thats why everyone's was turning out dry! If you make with corrections it turns out perfect!

I agree with a couple of other reviewers followed the recipe exact and it was too dry. Maybe they should review the recipe before posting. I bought everything just to make this cake for company and it was disappointing. I threw it out..

This cake tastes good but it's very dry and crumbly. I could swear Ina said 1&1/2 cups of buttermilk on the show, but the recipe on the computer only called for 1/2 cup. That could be the reason it's so dry. I didn't try the icing recipe with the cake. I was disappointed because this cake takes a lot of expensive ingredients.

Great cake. The recipe is definitely ONE and a half cups of buttermilk in the cake recipe - - but it comes together easily and tastes great. The ingredients need to be good ones then let the frosting cool - - yep, had to make it twice because I ignored this step the first time and had chocolate liquid instead of frosting. How I love the Barefoot Contessa!!

Saw Ina prepare this today and had to make it myself since I had everything on hand. My mistake was not to prepare the icing and took a shortcut and used store bought! Next time I will with a doubt make home made icing for this cake. I did change the buttermilk to 1 1/2 cups - I could swear that is what Ina used on the show. I will try again and recommend it to anyone! I would guess Ina's icing would make it a 5 star!
