I was really excited about the recipe after all the great reviews. I make bolognese a lot and I know that whole milk gives me a better thickness, so I figured that fat free half and half would help me thicken the soup with a few less calories. I was really disappointed in the final product. The soup was ok, but had an odd sweet flavor. I would assume it's because of the half and half, but other reviewer said hers turned out great when she did this substitution. Any suggestions? What kind of milk are the rest of you using? Skim, 2%, whole? I'd love to know!

This is a great chowder. Like most people, I added some cayenne pepper to add some quick. The cayenne pepper was a great addition! This is a keeper recipe.!

Made this recipe and it tasted wonderful, probably wasn't as great for leftovers as I'd expected. I remember a Martha Stewart clam chowder recipe from years back and i thought that one was a tad better than this one, which is why I gave this a 4 star rating instead of 5 stars, but I love Ina and she's my favorite chef, hands down!

well, as always INA never lets you down. this recipe is absolutely delicious. only change I used a few cans of whole baby clams and added a bit of cayenne. BUT oh the crowd went MAD over this pot chowder. fresh bread, good butter and a bowl of this chowder - HEAVEN. you can't go wrong. simple and scrumptious.

I added a bottle of beer at the very end. It give the soup another depth of flavor. Delicious soup with beer or without.

I am picky about chowder. I used half and half instead of milk the second time I made it. It was EXCELLENT. Easy recipe to follow.

Really simple and great taste. My guest all loved it. I didn't have enough clam juice so I used a little chicken broth and it came out great,

After checking out many recipes for clam chowder and the reviews-the wife and I settled on this one. Like many people we made some changes to match our tastes and experiences with clam chowder. Like many people we added bacon-we also like our chowder rich.
So a lot of cream and half and half were added-cut down on the carrots-only 2.. The texture was perfect , the taste was outstanding. As good as I have ever had. Costs were high-especially for clam juice. Frozen or fresh clams were not available. Canned worked fine. My daughter works for a large food distributor. I can see a case of clam juice in my future. Great base to start with.
