i made this at a little fiesta with my friends and family and everyone really loved it. i accidentally added a little too much cayenne, but i also only added 1 jalepeno so it ended up having a perfect spice to it. instead of a bell pepper i added corn because i love that combo of black beans and corn and tomatoes. it was so delicious with some homemade corn tortilla chips mmm i'm hungry just thinking about it! next time i'll try adding 2 jalepenos and cilantro along with the corn again! so so good!

This is such a delicious and easy salad to make! I went back for seconds and thirds at lunch today! The only thing I forgot to add was the cayenne pepper and garlic and I really didn't miss it. I found that the heat of the 2 jalapenos was just right amount of heat. I highly recommend this.

I dont care if Ina hates cilantro...this recipe is useless w/o it. At least mention that it needs it but youre leaving it out because you hate it! It's like making a steak but leaving out the meat because you hate it???

I did make a couple of changes. Since one of the people I was serving the salad to doesn't care for black beans, I used pinto beans instead. I also didn't have any fresh jalape?os, so I used about a tablespoon of sliced, canned jalape?o peppers. This was a marvelous salad! Thanks, Ina! I'm a big fan!

I am NOT a fan of hot & spicy and am always wary of any recipe calling for jalapeno but I found using (2 small peppers as called for added just enough flavor without having to reach for a glass of water (if you're not convinced initially try one small jalepeno and see how you do. It's a great side salad but I usually dice up one large baked chicken breast to make it into a hearty meal. LOVE IT. As others mention - I add fresh avocado just before serving.

I see that some people had bitterness in this salad and did not know why... the cause for it is cilantro, it causes bitterness in some uncooked dishes; that is why Ina does not add cilantro to her gacamole recipes as well as to this one. Also, you can easily use lemon for this recipe instead of lime, hardly any one will notice any difference.

I made this "salad" yesterday, following the instructions to a "T" but, knowing that I'd never eat it all at one time, decided to keep the dressing separate and to add the avocado at each time of serving. I had some "Southwest Tilapia with Lime Zest" fillets in the freezer which came from QVC. 15 minutes in a 400-degree oven is all it takes, whether you're preparing one fillet or the entire bag. Using a fork, I flaked the hot fish into bite-size pieces and added it to the salad, along with the avocado and some of the dressing, and then spooned the mixture into warm corn tortillas. Excellent!

Today, I again baked one of the tilapia fillets and flaked it with my fork, but instead of making a taco out of the mix, I made an entree-sized salad. I mixed it with baby arugula and broken Black Bean and Jalapeno Tortilla Chips (Archer Brand from Target. A delicious salad!

Tomorrow, I'm going to make a pasta salad, using the last of the leftovers of this recipe, and SHRIMP!

As Ina would say, "How bad is that?" ;-

I made this tonight to serve with fish tacos. It was absolutely delicious!!! I made two small changes to use what I had on hand and it was great. I replaced the bell peppers and jalapenos with anaheim chiles. The flavor was good and I would make it either way next time. I also omitted the cayenne pepper, but only because I didn't really look at the recipe once I got started on the dressing. We ended up eating the salad on the fish tacos and it tasted great! It would also taste great eaten on chips. Just a great simple salad that would be good with anything!!
