I thought I would just love this applesauce but the combo of apples and oranges didn't work for me. I was surprised to see so many 5 star ratings for this recipe, it just goes to show that everybody has different tastes. I would make it again but next time with no oranges and maybe just a squirt of lemon juice to keep the apples from browning.

HAD THE JOY OF SPENDING CHRISTMAS '09 WITH MY DAUGHTER IN CALIFORNIA. WE HAD A GREAT TIME AND ALTHOUGH WE NEVER GOT AROUND TO MAKING COOKIES, WE DID MAKE INA'S APPLESAUCE. WOW! WE USED ALL RED APPLES, AND LEMONS FROM NIKKI'S TREE. IT SMELLED LIKE CHRISTMAS AND TASTED LIKE THE BEST, FRESHEST APPLESAUCE EVER. THANKS, INA, FOR THIS 'MEMORY-MAKING' RECIPE.

LOL I agree with another reviewer, I cannot go back to jarred applesauce after this simple yet delicious recipe. I had a total of about 9 apples, (Granny Smith and Mcintosh I think, and I cut back the cinnamon to 1 tsp , the allspice to 1/4 tsp, and used only 1 BIG orange. I did add a splash of oj before it went into the oven and used dark brown sugar as that is what I had on hand. Other than that, I used everything as called for. It came out fabulous.

While this applesauce is a winner for it's wonderful consistency and the simple preparation, I find that it's a loser for the taste. Maybe I'm a traditionalist, but the oranges and lemon give it a tang that I wouldn't normally associate with applesauce. Only one of my guests seemed to really like it, but I certainly didn't. The citrus undertones would seem to blend better with a Spring/Easter dinner than a Fall "comfort food" meal. Just give me lots of brown sugar and cinnamon in my applesauce and I'm a happy host. I gave this recipe a 2 star rating because, no matter how easy a recipe is, if it doesn't taste great, it's not worth it. Now my question is = what should I substitute for the orange and lemon juices?

Ina's recipes are usually a hit with me, but this was a miss. I was so excited about this recipe, but the orange was way too much for me. It was overpowering. My husband said it tasted like Orange-Glo cleaner, and I have to admit, it did a little. Otherwise, it was great and so easy. I would just omit the orange, it doesn't need it!

This recipe is so easy and is delicious!!! The aroma that fills the house while the apples are baking is mouthwatering. A couple of things I changed about the recipe- didn't have oranges on hand, so just used some orange juice from the container- worked well. Didn't add any zest or lemon juice. Also, I reduced the butter by 1/2 just to get the butter flavor and richness, but taking away some of the fat. I used Gala and McIntosh apples (it's what was on sale and it turned out wonderful. Freezes very well too so that you always have some homeade applesauce on hand! One other note- use a potato masher instead of a whisk so as not to scratch the bottom of your enameled dutch oven. I am so glad I tried this recipe and will never use another one!

I loved this recipe. It was so easy and the flavor is out of this world. Prep, throw in the pot and voila, homemade applesauce. I made a porkloin and it was a great accompanment. Thanks Ina!!! Another winner.

Great recipe! I've made it a number of times, and it's always excellent. I usually use a mix of cooking apples, and after the first time, I've never peeled them - I just put the sauce through a food mill when it's done cooking, and it comes out a lovely pink color.
