These were fabulous! I added a little extra cononut because I love the extra sweetness, and also added some dried cherries. Next time I might make a cherry-chocolate chip-pecan variety - yum!
My bars stuck together without a problem; a little crumbly on the edges, but I expected that. I pressed mine into the pan pretty firmly it that seemed to help; also, don't skimp on the butter suggested, or use a low-fat version - it's one of the elements that acts as a binder. I'm not sure if it's possible to make these really crunchy, but maybe reduce the dried fruit (which still has some moisture, try a larger pan, press them very thin, and bake them until really brown. Still won't likely be the same as store-bought, but it might add a little crunch.

My husband and I love these! In fact, the first time I made them, we fought over who would get the last one (and who would have to "make do" with the last of the homemade chocolate chip cookies. I follow the recipe exactly and I wouldn't change a thing.

These sounded so good but when I made them they had a funny smell. So, I checked the honey I used and it had a weird smell too. The bottle was new but may have been of the cheaper variety. Are there some honeys that just smell bad? Word of advice: make sure you use honey that smells good before you go to the trouble of making these. I may have to throw mine away:( P.S. generally I LOVE all of Ina's recipes....

Yes these tasted so good we had a hard time NOT eating them. However - mine were sticky even after more than two hours of cooling. I left out the dates and apricots but added dried cranberries and cheeries and some dark chocolate chips. Otherwise I followed the recipe. Does anyone have tips for how to get the bars to be firm and crisp rather than chewy and gooey?

Easy and yummy! I made a few adjustments as well. I sprinkled nutmeg (1/4 tsp and cinnamon (1/2 tsp on the oat/almond/coconut mixture before toasting. I also baked the mixture on a waxed paper lined 16x9 cookie sheet for thinner bars. After baking the entire mixture, and before cooling, I poured some milk chocolate chips (1 cup across the top and gently pressed them in.

Today, I modifed this recipe by replacing the brown sugar with agave syrup. I sometimes replace the cranberries with dried cherries. I also replace the almonds with walnuts and sesame seeds. I break up the bars into small chunks and eat with Greek yogurt. A very filling and satisfying breakfast.

I eliminated quite a few things like the dates, apricots, cranberries, coconut and wheat germ cause I don't like none of those and just substituted them with chocolate chips and pecans. Just as delicious. A great recipe just made it my own.

Okay, simply delicious. I don't like real sweet things and this has the perfect balance of slightly sweet with the tart dried fruit that I used, dried cherries and blueberries.
