Tried this recipe...turned out wonderfully. Next time I would probably add a little extra sugar...I like a sweeter bread. The dough was wet, but I just kneaded a little extra flour into it and it turned out great!

Wow. After realizing I kept trying to save this recipe to my recipe box, every time I'd see the episode, I decided it was finally time to make it. It just came out of the oven - my house smells amazing - and I only let it cool for a few minutes because I couldn't wait to taste it. Spread a little butter on it and took a big bite...sublime. Fantastic. Superb. There aren't enough adjectives for this bread! As far as the preparation, yep, it was definitely sticky. Very moist dough, a bit hard to shape. Where Ina's was a nice neat round loaf, mine was much larger, about the size of a Frisbee! As such, it took a bit longer to cook, probably 5 extra minutes. I followed the recipe exactly otherwise, except that I did make my own buttermilk (with vinegar and milk and used Craisins because I didn't have currants in the house. Too bad I'm all alone here, no one else to try it, but I have a feeling my husband and daughter will be enjoying it later.

When I got to the part of turning the dough onto a floured board, my dough was bone dry. No matter what there is 4 cups of flour and 1 3/4 cups buttermilk. I kept adding buttermilk to no avail. Certainly did not work for me.. What came out of the oven was certainly on its way to being a nice Irish Soda Bread but it was only about 20% of what it could be.

I thoght it wa really really really tasty. My favorite part is the crust because it tasted so rustin. But the hard part was shaping it because it was very wet and sticky. And it was hard with my Betty Crocker electric mixer, I so need the Kitchen Aid electric mixer which I found at target for $199.99.

I really liked this recipe of soda bread. I feel like it didn't taste exactly like soda bread I had at Irish but it still was very good.

My parents live in Florida, but we all watch The Food Network shows. She called after Ina made the bread, and said she was sending Dad to the store that very day to get the ingredients. They raved about it. I made it the next week-end, and loved it as well. Made extra loaves for my in-laws, and neighbors.
Today, I made one to send to my sister in CA. Share the love!

Ina's done it again. While admittedly I haven't tried a great many Irish soda breads, I suspect that this is as good as it gets. That touch of orange zest
is perfect. I split the dough into two loaves so I could share with a friend and
her husband and they loved it and will be making it, too. Thanks Ina!!
