Quick, easy and delicious! I mixed the bread the night before St. Patrick's day. The next morning I brushed the top with cream and baked it as a special treat for co-workers. Even my Irish friends thought this bread was the best they'd ever eaten.

This recipe is so easy and wonderful! I made it for my large Irish family for St Patty's day and everyone loved it. It is perfectly moist on the inside, with a beautiful browned crust on the outside. The currants were fabulous, but substituting raisins if you have them would be just as good. It goes wonderfully with tea (especially Twinings Irish Breakfast or coffee. I have enough left of the ingrediants to make a second batch and you can bet I will soon. What's wonderful is that it is pretty inexpesive to make. I already had most of the ingrediants in my pantry. The dough is wet, but the recipe is fine in my opinion. Some people said the ratio's were off, but I don't think so at all. Follow the recipe and it should turn out wonderfully!

I made this exactly as she stated for St. Pattys and it was simply MARVELOUS! I made no substitutions or ommissions and it came out perfectly. The dough is SUPER sticky and when she tells you to use a well floured board, DO IT! I saw her do it on the show and she definitely used it liberally and it paid off - I kneaded it a few times and when it got sticky I added a dusting of flour wherever necessary. This morning I had some leftovers and broiled a slice in the oven with some butter, cinnamon and sugar and it was soooooooooo good! YUM YUM YUM YUM I will never buy soda bread again.. EVER!

Wonderful, rustic, a great way to celebrate St. Patty's day! I substituted raisins for currants and made my own buttermilk (combine 13/4 tbsp of fresh lemon juice--about half a lemon--with 1 3/4 whole milk; allow ~5 min to curdle. Fantastic flavor. I also enjoyed the orange zest contribution.

Great recipe! I've never made Irish soda bread until tonight and I'm amazed at how good it came out. I cut the recipe in half and it made a nice sized loaf, perfect for 2-4 people. I didn't have buttermilk so made sour milk instead (one tablespoon of white vinegar per cup of milk and it still came out great!

1 and 3/4 cups buttermilk is not anywhere enough liquid to make this "very wet," or even mixable with a mixer - I had to add at least another cup. Until someone at food network fixes this recipe, AVOID IT!

No paddle, no cuisinart, just your hands and I made ISB for my St. Patrick's birthday party. I added extra cold shortening to the dough to add more moisture, and kneaded a 1/4 cup more flour to form the loaf only. It worked more like a pie crust flaky on the outside and moist enough inside . We ate it with butter and corned beef and cabbage. We made another batch with raisins and dried apricots, it was very good.
Thanks for the recipe, Patrick Tremblay, Santa Clarita Ca.

I mixed this by hand because I don't have a paddle attachment. The dough seemed very dry, not very wet like the recipe said, and the bread came out dry. Where did I go wrong?

I have made Irish soda bread many times before and found this dough terrible to work with. It was way too sticky, I couldn't even mark it with the X on top. I love Ina's savory dishes, however, her desserts/baking recipes are not consistent.
