This is a great recipe. I made a few little changes based on what I had in my kitchen and what I could find in the store. I used boxed stock, I used dried Italian bread crumbs in the meatballs. I could not find chicken sausage so I added some fennel seed and some ground sage to the chicken and that added the extra flavor that was missing, plus it was probably a little more healthy. I would make the meatballs a little bit smaller so they fit on the spoon with other ingredients. Also, I would rough chop the spinach before adding it again just so that it is easier to eat. The flavor of the soup was amazing and it was quick to pull together because I had made the meatballs over the weekend and refrigerated them. I put them in the soup while the pasta was cooking so that they would have plenty of time to warm through.
    I will make this again!

My new favorite soup! A good rich homemade broth is the key to this recipe. The chicken meatballs were delicious as well. I used fresh 3 cheese tortellini for my pasta and highly recommend it. If you think you'll have extra soup, I would recommend taking out what you will refrigerate or freeze without the pasta. The tortellini held up ok but something like orzo soaks and swells up too much. I couldn't find fresh dill and didn't have any dried so I omitted that but will try it next time. I used 2 bunches of fresh spinach, as cleaning and de-stemming is so much cheaper than buy the pre-bagged stuff. The leftover soup tasted even better!

This soup has been a huge hit with my husband and 12 year old! The meatballs definitely make it and we have used them for spaghetti and sub sandwiches. I keep a batch frozen for last minute dinners. YUM! I did not use the dill for the soup and the flavor was still great. I have also used kale instead of spinach, both are awesome but I think I prefer the kale.

Meh. Just wasn't a huge fan of this. Maybe it was the addition of dill (which I normally love? Overall it was bland and dill-y. Id much prefer Giada's Turkey Kale Soup over this.

    Dear Ina
I made this soup and it was wonderful. I love making homemade soups and this one is the best. Shared it with two of my neighbors who loved it. They can't wait until I make it again. I maded some miner ajustments to some of the amount of chicken broth by using 4 cups of water and adding chicken stock also, but other then that the recipe is perfect.

Pretty good! I was afraid to add all that dill so just use 1Tbs. My husband loved it but I thought it was a little bland. I doubled the meatballs as suggested and froze some for later. When we reheated the leftovers, I added 2tsp chicken base and the rest of the dill. Much better but I think a more robust 'green' will be even better than the spinach. I will try again.

You are making a mistake if you don't make the meatballs. They are so delicious and worth the effort. I have made this recipe many times and it is always a big hit with everyone. I've ordered this soup at several restaurants and I always tell them that Ina's is better.

Soooo tasty!! The amount of spinach looked a bit daunting, but even my 5-year old who wouldn't go near spinach ate it with a smile! I did omit the dill since that is a pretty strong herb, and without it the flavor of the soup was superb. Great recipe, definitely one that I will make regularly!
