Made this (with my own chicken stock, thank you very much! Gave a quart to my bf and he texted me that it was the best soup he'd had since his mother's minestrone! (I liked it too.

Be advised: you really do need a very big dutch oven or caserole; my Lodge 6 qt. was barely contained this recipe. Actual yield was 5 1/2 qts.

This soup is fabulous. My store didn't have green lentils, so I used brown, and I didn't have leeks, so I doubled up on the onions. Make sure you use a nice, fruity olive oil to drizzle on top. I have made it on several occassions and will continue to do so.

This is an okay recipe especially if lentils are new to you. I felt like I was missing an herb and would have preferred a thicker texture.

I made this soup over the weekend and it turned out fabulous! I substitued turkey kielbasa and followed the rest to a tee. My picky 4 year old even liked it. A must have recipe for your collection!

I don't understand any ratings that do not give this one high marks. If your soup didn't taste good, check your ingredients and make sure you followed the directions. I just made this soup last night and it was amazing! Several of the ingredients are new to me as I am experimenting with recipes and expanding my culinary habits (thing that I will eat. I did add a little extra cumin and my sausage was a little more than a pound, so there is some "heat" to the soup, but just enough (I don't like hot/spicy things. This soup will be perfect for a cold evening in the fall or winter. I was very glad to come across this recipe and I thank Ina for introducing me to lentils and leeks with a nice savory dish!!

Honestly, I really wanted this to be fabulous. I followed everything exactly, but substituted in cooked italian sausage instead of kielbasa. The flavors were good, the soup was satisfying, but it was just lacking something (and i wish i could figure out what that something is. I have a good taste for flavorings, and have made many soups before, but this was mediocre. I've read other recipes (alton brown's, giada's, etc that call for a variety of different spices. Ina's only called for 1 tsp of thyme, cumin, and some S&P. It just wasn't enough to make this stand out. I feel like it might have needed sausage to cook in it right from the start to flavor the veggies as a base, and more garlic.

Since it was relatively inexpensive to make, and i still have all the ingredients, i might try tweaking it to see if i can give it the kick it needs. Until then... I"m left with 4 quarts of lentil soup (which i will probably either toss or freeze.

Not really a summer soup, but very hearty and satisfying. Another recipe from Ina that makes a ton! And it does freeze very well. Be sure to rinse your leeks extremely well and use good quality kielbasa. !

This was delicious and so healthy! To make it even healthier I skipped the sausage (it doesn't need it...it's so good and didn't add any salt (the chicken broth has enough in it, plus for you salt lovers out there you can always add some to your bowl later if you need it. I made just half the recipe. It makes a ton. And I threw in two bay leaves while it simmered.

I like my lentil soup thick so after I let the soup cool down for a bit I pureed it just a tad.

Yummy and warm...perfect for a cool weather day!

Loved this soup! I added left over easter ham to the mix after the soup had finished simmering and it was excellent. I also added red pepper flakes, a whole small can of the tomato paste and used the red wine vinegar not the red wine. I'm now a lover of Lentil Soup!
