Very good and hearty soup. I made it for a large group of men and it was wiped out with folks asking for the recipe. It doubled very well. The basic changes I made were to double the sausage as suggested in another review: half kielbasa, quarter mild italian bulk and quarter hot italian bulk, browned and drained before adding. I also added some extra garlic, 3 cloves instead of 2. It tasted great using boxed organic chicken stock. I only used half the salt due to the extra sausage. To thicken it up a bit, I pureed a heavily lentil laden 2/3 blenderfull of the soup, without sausage, and returned it to the pot. The soup was delicious served with country style french bread. It paired beautifully with a spicy Syrah.

It was tasty and I will make it again. Its a thick soup no doubt. You will need a big pot. My pan was 8QT and it was completely full.
To save time cooking this, I boiled chicken broth first. While its trying to boil, you can cut up all the vegetables etc.

Yummy soup with a few adjustments. I only used 2 cups of chopped celery, carrots, 3 cups of onions and 5 cloves of minced garlic and I didn't have any wine so I just left it out. I added the sausage when sauteeing the carrots and celery and I also added some italian sausage I took out of the casing and added at the end of cooking, I loved the taste of the two kinds of sausage and I also used 1/2 cup of tomato paste instead of the 1/4 cup. Served with freshly grated parmesan cheese and crusty multigrain bread for dipping, I will make this again.

I tried this recipe after watching her make it on the "Tale of two soups" recipe. While making it, I was a little skeptical of how good it would taste. It was very brown and not so exciting looking, but I must say, this is one of the best soups I have ever had, ever. And I like soups. It makes a HUGE amount, so it is great for a large family, or a couple that likes lots of leftovers. The flavoring in the broth is just wonderful. We like it better with double the amount of kielbasa, which yields around 6 bites of kielbasa per bowl of soup instead of three, but that is just personal preference. Also one thing to note, use the biggest pot you own. I made it in a 9 qt. Le Creuset round dutch oven, which looked exactly what she was using, but my soup pot was filled to the brim. A larger pot would have been useful.
UPDATE:
I've made this soup numerous times now, and not only do I double the kielbasa, but I double the liquid. Ina's recipe is a bit more stew-like, and we like lots of broth.

Ina never disappoints! This is one of my favorite go-to fall or winter soups, though I did make it in the summer this year because it's that good. It's very hearty and delicious. I use turkey kielbasa and I love the little zing that the red wine vinegar adds to the taste. It also seems fairly healthy which makes me feel better when I go back for seconds. I like to serve it with crusty rolls. It does take a while to chop up all the ingredients, but it's completely worth it. Just make sure you have a large pot as it yields a lot, I use a 7 1/4 dutch oven.

Absolutely loved it! I added 1 very large potato, peeled and diced along with the carrots and celery. I am not crazy about kielbasa, so I used mild Italian sausage. I browned it in olive oil then set the sausage aside. Using the same pot and leaving the oil in it, I added the rest of the ingredients. 30 minutes before the soup was finished, I put the sausage back in to add more flavor. I will make this soup again!

My family and I LOVED this soup. Used turkey kielbasa. So hearty and delicious; tomato paste really makes this soup. We have soup weekly, and this one is just the best. Can't rave enough about it! And, like so many soups, so great the next day. I omitted the leeks, only b/c the grocery store didn't have any. Result was still FABULOUS!

Not happy with this one. I like the lentils, sausage and vegetables. The cumin gave it an earthy taste that I, nor my Husband, could stand. This one went to the dog.
