I took this to a family get together and everyone loved it.
Super easy and great flavor. Definitely make this. I left out the tomatoes because I'm a purist. :-

I love the freshness of the added tomatoes. I too, as many of the other great cooks out there, used a baby swiss cheese instead of the Gruyere. The baby swiss is not quite as strong in flavor. I also omitted the nutmeg because my 4 yr old granson thought I sprayed air freshner over a pot of greens I had added it to in a previous dish. As always though, Ina's recipes do allow for your own spin, and they turn out wonderful!!

Delicious! I hate making changes before reviewing a recipe, but I did. Gruyere was WAY expensive, so I used Monterey Jack and the extra sharp cheddar called for in the recipe. Also, one cup of heavy whipping cream to replace one cup of milk. I used plain store bought bread crumbs. Will definitely be my go-to recipe for mac and cheese!

We all enjoyed this mac & cheese very much. Not too much effort and lots of leftovers!
I added those crispy onions to the top 5 minutes before end time for crunch & extra flavor since I did not have breadcrumbs handy, or bread.. I also added thyme for color and drizzled just a bit of olive oil on the tomatoes before baking. The next time I think I'll add either some dry crushed chile pepper for a bit more zing. This would also be nice with feta & greek olives.

The best mac and cheese I have ever made, but I did make the following modifications: substituted rigatoni for the macaroni; used 12 oz. mild white cheddar and 8 oz. asiago; used 3 1/2 cups of milk and 1/2 cup of half and half; eliminated tomatoes (why would you mess up a perfectly good mac and cheese with tomato? topped with panko bread crumbs. I have made practically every variation on mac and cheese, and Ina's recipe, as usual, provides a great basis for making individual adjustments to taste.

Made this last night, we all LOVED it. My husband said, "I never thought I could like mac & cheese"...ha ha ha. I did use a combination of cheese, to use up some that had been around for awhile, sharp cheddar, Jarlsberg and Gruyere. Thanks Ian, you're the best!!!!

I am from the Detroit area. My family thought the macaroni and cheese was better than Slows BBQ mac and cheese. It was delicious. I substituted mozzarella for the Gruyere. Instead of regular bread crumbs, i used Panko Japanese Bread crumbs to top it off with for a better crunch. Will definitely repeat this dish again.

This if the best mac & cheese by far I usually add more cheese Her Penne with five cheeses is sooooo delicious too. The only problem is they are fattening. But to make it lo fat would be disappointing in taste it probably would be ok but not delicious. rating for this recipe YUM!

The BEST mac and cheese I've ever had! Be sure to use good quality cheese and freshly grate, whole milk and follow the recipe for seasoning, it will make all the difference. It does not take long to make fresh bread crumbs, they were the perfect finish to the dish! Perfect for a family dinner, friends over or a great dish for a pot luck! Thanks again Ina for another amazing dish!
