AWESOME! I personally love Ina's 'Grown up' recipe but my husband isn't into the fancier cheeses. This one is simple and great for everyone...it even has a slightly more sophisticated taste from the Gruyere (which I love!. Based on the reviews, I decided to divide the recipe by 4 b/c it was a side dish just for two...and it turned out great. Would definitely use half or full recipe for company.

Every recipe of Ina's I have tried are super...except this one. It came out dry and bland even tho I added 1/2 cup chicken broth to the hot milk (sauce looked pretty thick and America's Test Kitchen recipe adds the chicken broth so i did too. Maybe it turned out bland because I refused to buy Gruyere for $20 a pound so I bought good Swiss but I put in only .35 Lb of it...thinking I'll make up for the "lack of bite" the mac needs from too little Swiss by adding a bunch of Parmesan. Nope, Parm is not right for this dish. Shoulda got 12 ounces Swiss? Anyway, dryness was improved by adding the tomato. Not a slice but chopped tomatoes - adds great flavor and helps with the dryness. I also went very easy on the nutmeg so it would not overpower which 1/2 tsp. surely would have.

I've made this recipe several times and it's definitely a crowd pleaser. My nephew who's mom swears that he'll eat only boxed Mac and Cheese exclaimed that it was the best mac and cheese he's ever had. (Can I have more!

I too omit the tomatoes and have included some crumbled bacon in prior versions to successful results. Gruyere and sharp cheddar are the key.

Gruyere cheese is now $ 15.99 a LB in my area!! How can the adverage person afford that---and this recipie calls for 4 cups!!
How about letting us know about a cheese that we can buy--at a reasonable cost.

It even beats my grandmother's recipe. Hands down. For the past six months, I've had weekly wine-and-mac-and-cheese nights with the girls and we've tried a different recipe each week: Ina Garten's is the unanimous favorite thus far!

IF YOU'RE TIRED OF THE BOX STUFF AND WANT TO TRY AN EASY GOURMET MAC N CHEESE...THIS IS THE ONE! I USED ABOUT 2OZ. LESS OF EA CHEESE AND OMITTED THE TOMATOES. OH, AND DON'T FORGET TO ADD A LITTLE SALT AND PEPPER TO THE BREAD CRUMBS ON TOP. IT GIVES IT MORE TASTE. OTHER THAN THAT, IT'S DELISH AND SO CREAMY! GIVE IT A TRY!!

I have made a bunch of "gourmet" mac and cheese recipes, only thing I did different was to get in about 6oz of Fontina- it allowed for less of the expensive gruyere and made it sooooo creamy. This is another homey home fun from the lil lady.

i started making mac and cheese recipes a few weeks before thanksgiving to see which one got hte best results and this one was the winner, ...i would suggest making some extra tomatoes, they were delicious, almost an additional side dish themselves. and if you have folks int he group that dont like tomatoes (unfortunately the little kids in my group didnt beg for extra tomatoes they dont run into the mac and cheese, easily avoidable.

i tested this against giada's mac and chz, which really was wonderful, had a bit of fettucine alfredo to the taste so if that turns you on you might prefer giada.

if you want the best mac and chz that the grown ups and kids will love this one is the best.

One word, WOW! I made some healthier substitutions, e.g. skim milk, reduced-fat cheddar, and whole wheat bread crumbs but this is a splurge dish. I am going to make it on Christmas. It is absolutely fantastic. You must try it! Thanks again, Ina.
