The only reason that I am giving this recipe even two stars is because I like the chocolate and coffee combination. The rest of the recipe is far too buttery and chewy. My son loves brownies and he says they are too much like fudge. Maybe I should have added more flour or less butter - something was not right! I put them in the refrigerator as directed but that did not help. They just got more solid, but still tasted too greasy. Anybody have that problem and fix it successfully?

This recipe is amazing! The only thing is that the coffee flavor is STRONG. I used starbucks instant coffee (which might be why it was soooo strong-- and although I LOVE the flavor, other people who don't like coffee flavor should just skip the instant coffee flavoring or add very little.

TOTALLY OUTRAGEOUS!!! YUMMY! We love the texture! We had crunchy edges and top. Based on past reviews I did modify: 1-tbsp of instant espresso, used 4 ounces of semi-sweet/2 ounces of unsweetened chocolate, 8 oz vs. 12 oz of semi-sweet chocolate chips mixed in, used parchment paper, and I only had margarine and crisco to replace the butter. I also used Ghiradelli chocolate. My kids thought they were perfect! This is a keeper!

AWFUL. Oilly, doughy in middle and burned around edges. Followed directions to a T. For the amount of chocolate that went into them huge waste of resources.

Best. Brownies. Ever. Hands down. The first time I made them I didn't give them enough cooling time and they were crumbling. Still tasted like perfection but...now I make them the day before and refrigerate overnight. No crumbling. They are in the oven now and my mouth is watering!!

These are, by far, the best brownies I have ever tasted....and I'm not even that fond of chocolate or brownies. I made these for a friend, who asked "What is the secret ingredient?" The semi-sweet and the unsweetened chocolate, lots of walnuts, and the secret ingredient (instant coffee granules make for the most decadent brownie ever! Not too "cakey" and not too chewy. Amazing recipe.

FYI...This recipe has received 500+ reviews. One more...
Have used this recipe exactly...many times...delicious texture and flavor.
Have also used this recipe and replaced the walnuts with either pecans, pistacios or macademia nuts. This recipe has continued to produce great brownies!

A brownie for a 'mature' palette. Not your typical brownie because, though it has a lot of chocolate morsels in it, the unsweetened chocolate & instant coffee give it a slight bitter flavor that offsets the sweetness.
