This is a keeper! I cut back on the oil some, added a minced garlic clove to the onions while they caramelized and finished with a little more cayenne. Omg, it's so good!

This was wonderful, I suggest for you to watch the video of Ina making it, she used a food processor instead of a mixer to combine the ingredients. I think I'll use a little more sour cream and a little less mayo next time.

I made this to do a testing before formally making it for a work party. I liked it, but you REALLY have to like onions. I went by the recipe exactly and honestly, it is too rich for me. Maybe I need to cut down the butter and the vegetable oil. It was hard to finish it off over 3 days and I love dips too :(

This recipe changed my mind about onion dip, and the flavors one can achieve with caramelized (onions food.
You can't make this recipe without absolutely taking your time and caramelizing the onions perfectly. It takes a while, and its important to be patient and let them "do their thing".
That's the flavor here, and its amazing. Ms.Garten has made something so simple into something quite extraordinary. If I closed my eyes, and you didn't tell me... and I tasted this recipe, I would swear till the cows came home that it had beef stock in it. The onions when properly caramelized produce the perfect flavor for this dip. Now, of course, I am thinking about other applications for this...
PS - A friendly warning; this dip is addictive. I'm serious. You can eat the whole thing before you even know it. Forewarned is fair-armed.
Enjoy!

This onin dip is wonderful! I make it through out the year for get togethers, and it's always a hit on game night. I usually make several batches because it's usually the first food to disappear.

I added one big sweet onion along with one big yellow onion and also added 2 cloves chopped garlic when sauteing. It added another dimension of flavor.....but I am a garlic lover.

I have been making this dip for years. It is one of the best recipes I have ever made. Like other reviewers have said, let the onions cook and caramelize for a good long time. They need to be a rich brown color. I have also used reduced fat cream cheese and sour cream and it has tasted just as good. Just make this dip, you will love it.l

Truly fab! Made this for my Halloween party and adored it! If you're like me and you love the old school onion dip from the liptons soup packet, you will love this gourmet version. This is a keeper! Follow the recipe to a T - and when you add in the onions, include all the good oniony butter and oil from the pan. It makes the dip! Must try!
