I made this for Super Bowl. It is so easy to make, just be patient in carmelizing the onions, it is well worth the extra time. The taste is much better then any onion dip you can buy or make. I didn't have cayenne, but had some ground red pepper (same thing to me. Make sure, if you refrigerate this dip, you let it stand at room temperature. It needs to be served at room temperature. Everyone at the party just loved it. My granddaughter loves carmelized onion, and just thinks this dip is perfect.

On the mark as usual for Ina. The addition of chives made it great- and added much needed green color to it. I served with Kettle Chips LIghtly Salted and it was perfect. Absolutely fantastic the next day as well.

Just finished making this for Christmas Eve. I was concerned about the amount of butter and oil so I didn't use as much. I doubled the recipe and added 2 shallots also. It took over an hour to brown the onions. I kept checking them and thought about taking out some of the butter/oil thinking that it would make the onions brown. They finally were done. Just tasted the dip and was very pleased with the flavor. I know that tomorrow it will even taste even better.

I made this recently for my husband's surprise birthday party and doubled the recipe. This dip is the sweetest, creamiest onion dip I have ever eaten. It was so easy to make. I cut down somewhat on the butter, but I agree that you need it for the creamy, rich texture. One of my guests said that it was so good that he wished he could put his face in the bowl and lap it up!!!! Everyone remarked about how great this dip was and there was none to spare for later! Keep up the good work, Ina! Your recipes rock!

I have to agree with the other reviews....cut the butter. I made 2 batches over the weekend, both great. Cheers, to Ina....!!!

Say goodbye to the onion soup mix FOREVER! This is THE best onion dip. Honestly. I cut down slightly on the butter...make sure you really carmelize the onions. My last bit of advice....YOU HAVE TO DOUBLE THE RECIPE otherwise it will be gone before you know it!
