I read most of the reviews for this recipe and almost didn't make this due to some of the comments...Glad I did..It is very good.
Let me preface this by saying, I am not a red wine drinker so was concerned about others saying they were put off by the "winey" taste...I used a bottle of Cavit Pinto Grigio. I only marinated the meat for about one hour due to the concerns from other reviewers.
The marinade smelled great...I used all of the left over marinade--I think the recipe calls for 2.5 cups--go ahead and use it all, and instead of the sun dried tomates added a 14.5 oz can diced tomates with the juice.
This turned out GREAT! Wonderful flavor...Others commented it was too dry...I did not find that to be the case. It was a perfect 'stew' consistency.
The taste reminded me of Ina's company pot roast which is, in Ina's word, fabulous.
BTW: Instead of cooking in the oven, I cooked at low temp in a crock pot for 6 hours. Yumbo!

Can't say enough good things about this recipe. So delicious! The wine really breaks it out of your normal beef stew...the wine gave it a wonderful "edge". The meat was nice & tender also.

This was the best stew that I have ever made! I did not marinade the beef overnight, but I will next time. Also, I didn't have a bay leaf. I did add the whole bottle of wine to the stew, and it was wonderful. Everyone raved. I am not a stew fan, but my husband is, and this was great! I highly recommend it!

We LOVE! this recipe! I have to say I understand how someone might have issues with the flour coating and the meat being "mushy". There is a little trick...cook the meat in groups of 10-15 pcs. I did this in my slow cooker and the meat came out great. I also only used half a bottle of syrah and the meat wasn't "winey" tasting. This is definitely in my recipe box and I'll serve again soon. Just a fun dish idea...I made mashed potatoes (rather than putting potatoes in stew placed in a sourdough bowl and put the stew on top...huge hit!

I changed a few things when I made this recipe and it turned out fantastic. I didn't want really strong taste so I only marinated the meat for 2 hours in a good merlot. I left out the rosemary completely as I don't like its strong flavor. I did not use as much salt and pepper, I just salt and peppered like I normally would. I didn't mind the 2 pan method because everything needed to be cooked in batches anyway. I only needed about 1/2 cup of flour for the meat. The gravy was nice and thick and great to sop up with homemade bread.

I made this last night, following all the instructions. I agree with the comments about Rosemary. The next time I use this, I wil only use it if I chop it up so that it does not feel like I am eating grass.
Also, although I used a decent bottle of wine, the meat has a strong tangy taste to it, which I am not enjoying in a beef stew.

I agree with some of the reviews below in that it was very peppery for my taste. But all in all, it was good. I would definitely try to make this again and just continue to tweak it a bit for my own tastes.

It was OK. Her show makes me salivate daily and this was the first recipe of hers that we made.
Of course I will tell you why; it was without a doubt because of the insane amount of rosemary. I don't know where Ina's getting her rosemary but apparently it's NOT from the rosemary god we got ours from. Wow was it TOO MUCH! It was like eating good meat that had been sprayed with essential oil.
So, err on the side of less rather than more rosemary so that this otherwise outstanding stew won't become Rosemary's beef stew.
Do note that after it was made, the beef stew was a definitely 1-star dish and inedible. However, the day after it was soo much better; it greatly improved in the refrigerator overnight. I still had to cut the rosemary a bit somehow so I added a bunch of old barley that was going to _ in the cabinet. My little one year old girl LOVED it, she ate all of hers and some of her mine! But she liked it at any point perhaps her "taste" is better than mine.
