This started out as a classic "what can I do with the 1 pound bag of green split peas sitting in my cupboard?" I was down to no money to buy groceries (us teachers get paid once a month. I googled "green split peas" and it led me to this recipe. I chose it in part because I already had almost all the ingredients. I didn't have the onions or potatoes, but I had everything else. As I poured my olive oil in the pot I thought of the widow from the Bible who had nothing left but some oil and God multiplied it (I have to admit, I cried thinking about it. The soup turned out delicious and I didn't have to add any more seasoning; the recipe called for the perfect amount for my taste. I warmed some focaccia bread I had picked up from our church's bread ministry to go with it. Perfect! Thank you for this recipe. I now have healthy, tasty soup for the next few days. :

my family is from texas so we have been making good ole split pea soup with carrots, onions and a ham bone or smoked ham hock for the last couple hundred years. I used this as a reference as I wanted to add some spice to our traditional recipe. the garlic and oregano additions are new for me and really delicious. I couldn't skip the wonderful flavor that smoked meat gives the soup so I used a smoked turkey wing this time and it was outstanding. this flavored the broth so much that I only used about 2 cups of chicken broth, the rest was just water. I chop the meat and throw it in the blender with everything else and it comes out smooth and delish. also I kip the potatoes as they only add richness and its not needed. thanks for the ideas Ina

This soup turned our beautifully; just like I remember my mother making. I agree with IdaKnown. Cooking is an art not a science. Everyone's ranges operates at a different temperatures, split peas (like beans sometimes take longer or slower to cook depending on the grower and their growing season, and everyone has a different definition of how salty something should be. The only changes I made to this recipe were to add a bay leaf while it was cooking, adding about 1/2 cup of finely diced ham and a few drops of liquid smoke. I also added only 1/2 tsp of salt at the beginning and added what I needed at the end when the soup was done - you can always add more but can't take it out. Finally, I covered the pot until the peas were almost tender and then uncovered to let it reduce to the perfect consistency. This is a perfect basic recipe and now it's up to you to make it your way. Thank you Ina - what a delicious way to provide protein and fiber into our diets.

    Ok call me Merlin..
-If its too thick: add water or stock...
-If you like it meaty ..add meat OR First cook bacon in the pot, then add oil and onion and do the recipe
    -too thin - simmer longer
-like it heartier - add butter beans early and half way it will be thick
-bland- hmm .add your fave spices or cook bacon and add that as a topping, season to YOUR taste ( potatoes and peas can handle a LOT of pepper, and of course you are using freshly ground pepper not that dust that comes in a can
    * stop whining and start wine-ing and dining,
its food not magic. these are simple fixes..;-

The BEST! I can't believe a soup like this can taste so good without the addition of the usual pork. It is a healthy version of one of my favorite soups and it actually tastes better than ANY I've had with pork. DELICIOUS! Thank you Ina!

I loved it!! Very tasty and soooo easy....I followed the directions , cooking the onions, carrots,, garlic and spices on the stove, then added them to the crock pot with the green peas, diced potatoes, 8 cups of chicken broth, and cook them on high for 6 hours....when I came home I took a potato masher and mashed the ingredients to get a bit thicker consistency....It turned out delicious!!....Thank you Ina...I LOVE YOU!!

Wow. What did I miss or do wrong? I usually love Ina's recipes and hers is the first file I check for making anything. I follow recipes religiously the first time around so .....? This is the first one I'm not impressed with. Taste is bland, don't really care for some crunchy peas but just not in the ballpark tastewise.

My wife LOVES Split pea soup. But I love her anyway, so I made this recipe. Wow! Who knew it could be this good? Thanks Ina !

I cut back on the salt a bit, and since I added a meaty ham bone I had been saving for this occasion, I should have put in even less. Still, a great recipe!

This soup was very good. Even without the ham, it had a lot of flavor. I did add additional liquid. I started with 8 cups of chicken stock and then used water for the additional liquid to keep it from getting too salty. I made some croutons to go with it. I will definitely make it again.
