    I made the following minior changes:

    Do not like potatoes in soup, so I omitted them

    After cooking the first half of the peas, I emulsified everythig prior to adding the second half of peas. It made for a thicker consistancy, so I also added an extra can of chicken broth.

    I also added about 2 cups of diced honey ham.

    It was as delicious as what I ourchase at Balducci's---it actually tasted like the same ripe!!!

    I love split pea soup, but have never made it myself before. This recipe was super easy & the result was delicious- very flavorful and thick soup. Great for a rainy, cold day. Made about 6 helpings- freezing the leftovers. Made it with Ina's buttermilk cheddar biscuits- YUMMY!!

    This was my first time making pea soup. Both my husband and I are BIG pea soup fans and this recipe exceeded our expectations! Great flavor and texture. I doubled this recipe and added all the peas at the beginning. A few things I would like to share... I did not soak the peas in water at all. I used 1 cup grated carrots (got a prepared bag of grated carrots to save my knuckles and added 1 cup of diced celery. I added 2 cups of diced honey baked spiral ham at the end (leftover from Christmas. For the liquid, I used 1/2 chicken broth and 1/2 water which worked fine. I constantly stirred the soup at the beginning because I did not want the solids sticking to the bottom of the pot and burning. Enjoy!

    My husband and I love pea soup and this recipe is great. I had a ham bone and leftover ham so took other reviewer's suggestion and added both (the bone with the veggies and the ham cubes toward the end. I used yellow dried beans because that is what I had, soaked overnight and rinsed before using. Also added all the beans at once as suggested and cooked about one hour with delicious results. Thanks, Ina.

    I've done this soup 4 times and each time it's been WONDERFUL! I love the rustic vegetable style instead of the ham thing. I don't do the homemade chicken stock. I get the boxed Swanson (33% Less Sodium Chicken Broth. On a cold day or if under the weather, this is my go to soup. It freezes well, so I double the recipe and freeze half. I never really ate split pea soup before and hated the canned soup. My husband loves split pea and comes from a family that loves the soup. He thinks THIS soup is better than his grandpa's famous split pea soup. Also, my 21 month old son LOVES it. He eats so much, I think he will pop. This made a split pea believer out of me. Thanks Ina for a great soup recipe.

    I LOVE split pea soup, this is a great recipe- although it's hard to go wrong with chicken stock and a bag of beans ;
    I added about a cup more chicken stock because the man doesn't like a soup too too thick. Also

    A MAJOR POINT- I would add ALL of the peas at one time- 40 mins wasn't NEARLY enough for the second round of peas. I wasn't sure why they were added in 2 batches anyway- should have gone with the instincts! Overall, very easy and delicious recipe.

    This is the best split pea soup I've made. Wasn't sure about the potatoes, but I like them. This is my go-to split pea soup recipe.

    This is the very first time I tried making split pea soup. After reviewing all of the recipes on the food network website, I picked Ina's to try because, it is one of the lighter recipes to make and it is loaded with veggies. In addition to this recipe I added ham steak, cut into cubs, when carrots, potatoes, and broth were called to be dropped into the pot. This turned out delicious! Go ahead and try this, I know you'll love it! ^_^

    This soup was a hit. I made it with 12 c of stock... we like our soups thick and it was the best! I also added some ham to appease the meat lovers in my family. Everybody was happy and asking me to make it again!

    Everything is better with TR! But this soup would stand on its own.
