Bobby Flay! Help! This soup is good but needs some ham or SOMETHING for more flavor. Used all fresh organic ingredients from Whole Foods. Would like to try this again with ham as others have recommended. My husband loves split pea soup and I want to perfect this for him.

This is my go-to recipe for split pea soup now and it's never a let-down. It's fast, even with a toddler climbing up my leg while I'm cooking and my husband purrs through every bowl. Definitely give it a try. If you're a sucker for ham in your split pea soup like I am, this is a fine recipe with that addition, too. Tonight I used leftover bacon strips we got with breakfast and put it in the soup instead. Waste not want not, right? And my husband said it was the best batch I'd made yet. :

Ina served this as a side dish with one of her wonderful meals. But I made it for dinner with a light salad and we LOVED it!!! Thanks so much for the wonderful recipes. When I started watching Barefoot Contessa I thought that the recipes might be too expensive or to difficult to make, but honestly I have made many of them and will continue to do so. Take care Ina, I love the new barn!

my husband and i loved this! it's low cal, nutritious and delicious. all very good things when you have a mother-in-law to feed who is overweight. no guilt and good for you. i doubled the recipe so we would have leftovers for a short time. awesome comfort food on a cold winter night!

Instead of chicken broth, I boiled and boiled a leftover ham bone, then used that as the stock. Parker - well done!

I love all of Ina's recipes, and this one did not disappoint. After reading the reviews, I decided to add a little extra salt and cook the peas all at once. I don't know who thought this soup didn't have enough flavor, but next time, if anything, I will cut back on the salt! Pouring the peas in all at once also cut the cooking time back to one hour. In addition, I had to add about 1 cup of water at the end to "thin" the soup out a bit. One more thing, be careful at the end to keep stirring, as it can easily stick to the bottom and burn. Overall, a great winter soup!

I was surprised at how good this soup was without the meat! I didn't measure the oregano and maybe put a lot more in there than was called for, used some garlic salt and garlic powder (only had 1 garlic clove left and used boxed chicken broth instead of stock it was very flavorful. I also put in some celery and extra onions. Next time I will add all the peas at the same time.

This is without a doubt the best split pea soup I've had and I've had plenty. Very impressed as this was my first attempt at split pea soup and I've already converted three with this recipe. Ina is the best, love her show, her cookbooks (own three and of course her recipes. If you think your soup is too thin, it won't be the next day so keep that in mind and as another reviewer suggested, you can thicken with instant potato flakes!
