I wanted to make this recipe ever since I saw Ina prepare it earlier in the week. It was cold & rainy out so I didn't want to go to the store to buy the beans and used the cranberry beans that I had. I cut the recipe in half because there is just 2 of us and they came out great. I will make them again using great northern beans. My only question is that the beans were nice and tender but every so often there was one that was on the al dente side. How do I correct this? Now I am going to try the cranberry muffin recipe. Ina's recipes are always fantastic. Thanks, Ina!

So good. I substituted canned cannellini beans (6 cans for the dry beans and it was still every so tasty!

I made this fabulous dish with butter beans. The beans have a different texture and seem to hold the flavours much more. Have also made it with haricot beans but much prefer the butter beans they are awesome. Any leftovers are used as salad accompaniments and work just as well. Goes really well with Ham cooked in coke. A true family favourite.

Simple and delicious!! This was my first time cooking with dried beans and it was much easier than I anticipated. I followed the recipe EXACTLY and the dish came out perfect! I didn't make the 4 hour lamb to accompany it, but I did serve Cornish Hens and crusty French Bread-yum! I will definitely be making this recipe again.

Absolutely wonderful. The fresh rosemary is a nice touch. I used a combo of mushroom broth and chicken broth and also added some fresh green beans. Instead of sauteing everything I put the veggies in with the northern beans (which I did in a dutch oven in stages (carrots first, then celery, then green beans, then onion, garlic, & herbs. Very easy to make and so very flavorful.

Simply delicious! Everyone loved them. They took a little more time to cook--about two hours. They are well worth the time and effort. I will definitely make these again. However, I think I will go back to my regular leg of lamb. We were disappointed in the end result. It had a 'stewed' look and taste about it, but YUMMY beans!!!

I prepared the recipe exactly as Barefoot Contessa indicated in her t.v. show. It was very, very tasty. I received a lot of compliments from my guests. When the leftover were in the refrigerator for a couple of days, the beans were even tastier. I loved them! Fist time ever I cooked any sort of beans. Recommend highly.

I tested this recipe out this evening to prepare for a dinner party this weekend where I plan to serve it with Ina's 4 hour lamb. The recipe was easy to follow and delicious! I ate it with a chicken breast and thought the flavors were amazing. The only deviation from the recipe was that I added a pinch of dried provencal herbs because my grocery store was out of thyme. A winner.
