I added smoked salmon, and also used a jar of roasted red peppers. I did add the capers that were supposed to be in the marinade. It was DELISH!! Really flavorful!

This tastes just like the sandwiches I buy in the gourmet deli for 11 dollars...but way more roasted bell peppers and goat cheese to make many sandwiches. Those red bell peppers are outstanding! My husband grilled them on the BBQ and then I put them in a paper bag to steam for a little, they key is to get the skin really charred, it comes off easier that way. The marniade is so good. That could be used for a salad dressing also, which is what we did, and had to make more for the bell peppers. I used silver goat garlic and herb goat cheese from Trader Joes. I have always used plain goat cheese but decided to give the herb cheese a try to stick with the recipe. Wow, the herb and garlic goat cheese is addicting. Overall, a hit, my husband and I loved this. Even better if the sandwich is grilled on a panini or a BBQ, my husband just toasted his ciabatta in the toaster (we ran out of propane and it was really good with toasted bread...even better that untoasted.

Perfect made exactly as Ina says for those too hot to cook inside evenings. We're cutting back on meat, and this sandwich is so full of flavor it's a meat free hit.

Love this recipe! I have been making it into miniatures for parties and they are always a big hit! I just make crostini in the oven from good bread or even just buy the store prepared ones when making a large batch, then layer it with the cheese a smaller piece or two of pepper and a small thin slice of onion on top, so that it is open-faced. I'm sure it would be good with the basil layered on too in the summer. I also leave out the capers simply because I'm not a huge fan. This recipe is always a huge hit! I've never gotten any complaints after making one of Ina's recipes, and this is especially simple to make! Absolutely delicious!

Myson added his own twist to this wonderful sandwich. He cooks and slices up London Broil and adds it to the sandwich....awesome!

We love this sandwich! It's my go-to sandwich for summer picnics and winter paninis! I substitute jarred roasted red peppers too and when I don't have fresh basil from my garden I just use baby spinach. It's one of my favorite recipes EVER. Thanks Ina!

I'm not sure how anyone could like this recipe as it's written--there's simply way, way too much salt. The taste of the ingredients (minus the salt is actually very good--it's a good idea, and quite simple to make, even with the roasting of the peppers. But not a single member of my family could stomach this--we even took out the capers at the end, hoping that would help. And we didn't add in any extra salt before putting on the top layer of bread. Very frustrating--we had to throw almost all of it out, and with red peppers costing $1.50 each here (not to mention the cost of the ciabatta loaf, 11-oz. goat cheese log, capers, etc., it was a huge waste of money. I might try this again without the salt, or drastically reducing the salt. If you make this, be careful with that marinade--maybe even leave out the salt altogether and just salt to taste at the end. I think toasting the ciabatta loaf would make this better too. Ina's great, but I don't understand how she could eat this much salt (and I like salt myself!!

Those of you not roasting your own peppers, give it a try! I get a bag of 6 at Costco for about $5.49 and they are gorgeous. After roasting, peeling, marinating they go in a jar in the fridge. Just finished my first jar today and have more peppers roasting. I know what I 'm making for Christmas gifts for friends this year! And I do my sandwich open faced on my own home made hearty bread. Pick the fresh basil leaf off the pot growing in my kitchen on the window sill and I just feel yummy all over.

I didn't even have all of the ingredients and this sandwich was so good!! I used Kaiser rolls, goat cheese, jarred roasted red peppers and sweet onions with some dried basil (fresh would have been much better but it was still good. I would love to get all of the real ingredients and try it, I am sure it would be even better. I love Ina's recipes!
