This is a very tasty soup. I had to substitute a can of tomato paste and 16 ounces water last time because I only had 1 14.5 ounces can of stewed tomatoes. It worked out extremely well. In fact, I liked it better than way because it wasn't so acidic. All in all, Ina's recipes are very good.

Tastes great! I highly recommend this. Only thing I would do different is, if you don't like chunks of tomato, blend the roasted tomatoes just before adding them to the pot.

I made this soup yesterday evening and it was amazing! My fiance said it may even be better than Panera's tomato soup, which is our favorite! The only thing I added was 1 cup of cream at the end. I'll definitely be making this a lot!

I modified my soup by combining equal parts roasted red peppers and tomatoes, used freeze dried basil (due to availability and made it a bit spicier, but based it off this recipe. I really liked the fact that the tomatoes were roasted and it required no heavy cream.

    1.5 lb roasted plum tomatoes
    1.5 lb roasted red pepper
3/4 tsp of crushed red pepper
1/8 cup of Agave nectar (to cut the tartness
.28 oz bottle of freeze dried basil
    1 cup of fresh basil

The other ingredients were the same. I thought my concoction was very tasty, perhaps others may like it too.

Is it just me, or does anyone else think that Ina is a little heavy-handed with the SALT? My husband and I both have blood pressure issues, and he has had a stroke. I always cut the salt in Ina's recipes at least in half. Salt substitute is not medically acceptable for us....beside it tastes terrible.

This soup is AWSOME! I always make exactly like the recipe and my husband adds a little tabasco to his bowel. So easy, great year round! I always double it because it goes so fast. I have four kids and everyone loves it! I will never eat tomato soup with cream in it again, there's just no reason because this is the best!

It was great--but like some others on this, would like to know caloric intake.
