I needed a liquid diet for a few days, and even though it is a very hot August, I made this soup using fresh tomatoes from my neighbor's garden and fresh basil from my own herb garden along with some San Marano canned plum tomatoes. How delicious!!!!!!!! My husband also loved it! Some family members stopped by while I was putting the ingredients through my food mill and asked if they could try it; of course they wanted the recipe. I had also used it for a holiday brunch once; everyone loved it. Ina's recipes never disappoint me. Thanks.

I just love this recipe. It is a great way to use your garden tomatoes and fresh basil. I made it will all the fat and oil the first couple times but I have learned to make a lighter version that is just as good with only a bit of olive oil. It's out of this world! I love freezing this during the summer and then I have a nice reminder of summer in the middle of winter. Yummy!!

to the cook with the question re: canning - absolutely can this soup! you may need to add a little lemon juice just before placing the jars in the canner to obtain the acidity necessary. enjoy!

I just made this soup I was low on Basil so I used some fresh and some dried but not 4cup. I loved it!!! I am going to use left overs tomorrow on ravioli and see how it taste I bet it is great I might even add some mushrooms. I would leave out the pepper flakes next time a little too spicy for my daughter.

Hi there, because I did not have a mill I decided to put all what did not drain into a blender and mashed it up and added half of it to the soup...mmmmmhh

My favorite tomato soup recipe ever. I tweaked it a little...used dried basil instead of fresh and garnished with fresh...and i season my roasted tomatoes with dried basil, salt and pepper, and sugar. My husband and I make this soup, eat it with griled bacon and mozerella sandwiches on ciabatta bread (try spreading roasted garlic paste on the bread...heavenly and then we use the rest of the soup later in the week as a pasta sauce! It's absolutely perfect! Ina never fails. :

I love this soup. I also am asked for the recipe. I garden and I grow a lot of tomatoes and basil just so I have plenty to make this soup. Does anyone know if you could can this? I've got time with summer and fall to do some canning and was wondering it would work with this recipe.
Oh, this is great with toasted cheese sandwiches: rye bread, a little mustard, good cheddar, a little butter in the pan and toast until the cheese melts. NOT like mom made - BETTER!

I made the soup over the weekend and it was an absolute hit! I dont have a food mill and i just passed all the tomatoes through the blender for a few seconds. It has a nice spicy kick to it as well. Will definitely do this receipe again.
