Made this just now and it smells so good... sitting on the counter... covered in foil while the turkey is roasting... I went ahead and took a big bite just to see if it's good and if I don't stop myself there won't be any left!

I love Ina Garten's simple yet elegant recipes. I've tried several and this is another winner. I read most of the reviews before making this and used 2 cups of stock, as well as added sage and rosemary. Yes, add whatever herbs you like! The flavors are wonderful and I'm going to make this again and again. Super yummy!

I'd say Ina hit the nail on the head with this stuffing. The mix of the granny smith apples in with the celery and onion really give it a bite that's just enough different and absolutely wonderful. We used sweet italian sausage which I think was a perfect compliment to the apples and cranberry.

This was the first year I made stuffing, and only the second year we're having it at our house. Instead of making the traditional family sausage stuffing, I decided to try Ina's recipe. It's very similar but just enough different, we'll see who notices.

The only addition we did was a family tradition - try adding a pinch of clove into the mix (either into the sausage or into the veggies when they saute. It gives it an incredible fragrance without being over powering and makes all the flavors come out even more. I was skeptical at first but it was quite a great addition! I'll be making this again.

I made it yesterday exactly as stated except I added a little fresh sage and doubled the amount of celery. I loved it. I think you could do a lot of improv with this recipe, it is now my go to stuffing.

Maybe you people should stop debating between "herb" verses "herbs". Recipes are guidelines to be interpreted by the cook, NOT rules one absolutely HAS to follow. Be creative its not that hard!!!!

I wanted to try the Italian sausage but when I sent my husband to the store with the grocery list (last year I was very pregnant he came back with Jimmy Dean. Anyway, it was the sage kind & it was fine.

could you use Jimmy Dean's breakfast sausage or do you need Italian sausage?

I found this recipe when I was cooking Thanksgiving dinner for my whole family and wanted something to put a twist on mom's old stuffing recipe. When I brought this dish to the table, mom family ate it up. None was left. None. My husband liked it so much we have been making year round. This will be my new recipe for stuffing for my Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners for years to come.

I planned a Thanksgiving in May dinner for 20 friends. The sausage and herb stuffing got the most comments by far. I took everyone's advice and added more chicken stock. Even I was surprised by how wonderful it tasted. The only change I would make: use salt-free stock.
