I leave the sugar in because it brings out the flavors of the tomatoes. The best Italian cooks use sugar with tomatoes.

"These scalloped tomatoes are out of this world. We could have eaten the whole dish. Next time i will be sure to brown the bread a little longer so they are not so soggy in the casserole.Delicious!!!

Pretty good- like others I had the soggy bread, but it was still good. May try browning it off more next time.

I made this last night and it was great. I did about equal portions of bread and plum tomatoes. Per the other comments, I omitted the sugar. It was wonderful and I don't even like tomatoes!

This was too sweet with the added sugar but otherwise great. I added zucchini and portobellas.

Although I am not (correction, was not a fan of cooked tomatoes, after watching Ina make this recipe on TV (must have been a repeat episode yesterday, I knew I had to try this dish. And am I glad I did! What a great use of tomatoes. I used Parmisiano Reggiano cheese for that extra-special nutty flavor. Great dish and very easy to make. Thanks Ina for making me a fan of cooked tomatoes!

LOVED them, fast, easy and tasty. I Love all Ina's receipe's. So many books so little money, I could not decide which to buy. I went thru them all at the library and chose Back to Basics, for now.
