This is without of doubt the BEST side dish you would ever want to make. It's a great do ahead dish (I make it the day before and then bake it in the oven. Follow the recipe exactly and you will be a star! One more comment...You must use the Gruyere cheese on top and do not subsitute. Bon Appetit!

I've made this dish MANY times with great success. I agree with cutting back on the onions; I find that one large one is enough. I usually use an Italian cheese blend for the gratin itself and then on top. YUM!!!!!

This was a fantastic side dish. I made it for Thanksgiving and it was big hit. Even my kids who did not want to try it, ended up loving it. I do agree that you really need to use all fresh cheeses and grate them yourself. It costs more but adds so much more flavor to the dish.

Made this dish a few years ago for Thanksgiving. Everyone loved it and requested it for Christmas that year. Have passed the recipe on to several family members, and now we have it every year. You can make it ahead of time and reheat easily in a microwave. This is about the only way my youngest daughter eats spinach. My kids actually ask for this. It is just a really great recipe.

This really is a wonderful spinach gratin and I have been making it for years. Ina never cuts back on the butter or cream in her dishes so is very rich but very tasty. I highly recommend this dish to anyone who wants to impress!

I first made this casserole for Christmas 2003 and have continued to make it ever since. My entire family will eat this and I love that it tastes even better the second day.

My stepmother's favorite dish is creamed spinach. I was making my first Christmans dinner and wanted to impress. I made the spinach gratin with prime rib and everybody commented on how fantastic it was, but most importantly my stepmother said it was the best she ever had!

Who would have guessed, kids begging for spinach? It's like pulling teeth to get my family to eat spinach. Sometimes I can slip a few leaves into salad or puree it into meat lasagna, but as a side dish it must be poison. This spinach gratin has become a staple at our holiday meals. Sometimes I am asked to a dinner party with this spinach dish. Thank you Ina, because of your spinach gratin, my kids no longer think I am trying to poison them and my social life is thriving.

The first time I made this for Christmas Eve dinner no one ate it. Last Christmas Eve I steamed broccoli, poured the sauce over, baked, and the whole serving dish was gone. I have made this numerous times using broccoli, and I am making this today to take to a friends house for dinner tonight.
