A truly fantastic recipe. Absolutely delicious. I substituted yellow squash for the potatoes and it turned out fabulous, followed the recipe to the letter, couldn't have been easier

This is great! Even my 4 year old loved it! Ina's recipes are always great. And for the people that change the recipe and don't rate it well, how can you even rate it when you don't even follow the recipe? Try it, it is great!

Followed the recipe to a T, other than substituting rosemary for the thyme. We liked it, but didn't love it. Served for another couple and everyone said it was good, but no rave reviews. It is truly a beautiful looking dish, and a decent tasting side dish though. I also like that you get the veggies and starches all in one. I will probably make it again. Maybe the thyme is what "makes" the dish. :

The only thing I change in this dish is that I make more of it. I increase the ingredients and cooking time and overlap the rows pretty tightly. I've made this again and again, and it is truly a keeper. Thanks, Ina!

Whatever you do, do NOT use sweet onions....use the regular onions. I used one sweet and one regular and it was a bit too sweet tasting for a savory dish, but it was still good. It actually was better a few days after I cooked it, so it can be prepared and cooked ahead of time and then just reheated. I used a mild swiss cheese instead of Gruyere b/c I could not find it at the store and it was delicious. I partially cooked it ahead and then cooked it the additional time when company was here. Would definitely make again. In a buffet, this would probably serve anywhere between 10 and 12 people.

I'd made this several times and lost the recipe, much to my sadness. We absolutely loved the dish. Because it was displayed a limited time, I was sure I wouldn't ever have the recipe again. It's just delicious, I add some portabella mushrooms and it's only gets better. Thanks Ina, another wonderful recipe.
