Loved this -- although my first inclination was to add some tomato paste, it really "aged" after some simmering. Needs lots of salt and pepper. and I did add some chili flakes for some zing. It's a great twist on an old standby.

Just made these tonight and my husband and I loved them! I did sub ground turkey because we are trying to be more "health conscious" but it didn't make much difference - they were delicious. Grill/toast the bun and it will hold more of the filling : the peppers are a must. We had banana peppers on hand and they worked great. Definitely a re-make!

I absolutely love this sandwich. I didn't add the milk and it was still exceptional! The juices are soaked into the bread and it melts in your mouth. Love it.

Have made this "italian" version for years but ingredients slightly different.
Our recipe is almost the same EXCEPT the meat is 50-50...hamburger and italian sausage.
This sandwich is delicious!
