We did this one as a stir fry instead of a soup and absolutely loved it. I wish they would bring Jeffrey back. This recipe is a great example of why we like him... it introduces you to a spice/ingredient that you might otherwise have passed over and does it with a nice, simple recipe that really highlights that ingredient.

This soup is a nice change from my traditional chicken soup recipe, but a little too heavy on the salt and five spice. 1 tablespoon would likely have been more than enough, and no extra salt is needed if you're using soy sauce and store bought broth. What's nice is that you can really change it up so easily, making this a nice base recipe. You could easily add more veggies, or even change out the five spice for your favorite chicken seasoning. This was quick and tasty, with room to improve.

When I made this soup the other night, I stopped on my way from work to get groceries, and called my boyfriend to look this up and tell me what I needed. He failed to notice the five spice powder ingredient, so when I got home without it, I used allspice. I didn't use a ton of it..just sprinkled it over the meat after dicing it. The recipe was really flavorful and I would definitely make it again. My only complaint is that I prefer more vegetables in my stir fry, and would add some mushrooms and maybe other things as well, and less bok choy. A great starting idea (and one that really surprised the elderly Asian man at the Asian market near my home.

First I will say that if it was just my own rating I would give it a 3. Not bad, but not great. I did cut down the five star to 1 tbsp as many people suggested and I actually thought the soup was okay. Which is good since my wife and son hate it and now I have lots to eat. My advice to those who haven't made it yet would be to hold back on the five star spice some unless you know you enjoy it, and your family enjoys it.It appears from the reviews that this is a very polarizing spice mix. The same was true for my family. Also I read many of the reviews and it seems there were a lot of 1 star reviews so it seems misleading to me that this still has a five star rating. It really doesn't appear that enough people agree with that for it to still be justified.

I tried this soup and it is amazing. Not only it is hearty and healthy it is full of flavor. It is easy to have it as a soup and save the rest and warm it up with noodles for a different dish.

Jeffrey specifically says during his show that 5 spice can be made with white pepper or black pepper. He uses one with Szechuan pepper. I have not made this recipe yet but I intend to.

I changed a few things to make sure that my 3 teenagers would get full but like dishes with meat and veggies together. Basically, I doubled the meat and served over chinese flour noodles. My husband who is from Taiwan loved it. Had one son who wasn't too crazy about it but maybe when I try it again today, I will add a little less 5 spice as suggested in the other reviews.

Great and I loved it. Not so much getting the chicken chopped, but it was worth it. Sure with you had won. I think if you like Pho you will like this soup.

I'm with Suzan from Portland on this one. I made this recipe because it sounded interesting, was easy (but, not as quick as it appears by the time you chop the chicken and veggies and had RAVE reviews! What a disappointment! We like 5 spice in our house, in fact, we love spicy food of all kinds but this soup was SO overpowering. I had even cut down the amount of 5 spice powder from 1 1/2 TB to 1 TB but it still was beyond inedible. Of the whole pot, my daughter had 1/4 cup, I had 1/2 cup and my husband ate the rest - not that he liked it so much but he didn't want to be wasteful. I rarely toss out a new recipe after trying it but this one is worthy of going right in the trash!

I made this for dinner last night. It was definitely quick and easy, but I guess we don't really like 5 spice in our house. The smell of the 5 spice was so overpowering, we felt like we were eating a bowl of simmering potpourri. The soup itself was decent enough (we each ate one bowl, but very salty despite leaving the salt out. I suspect this would be better with homemade chicken stock, where you can control the amount of salt and significantly less 5 spice. I will probably be the only one in my house eating the leftovers.
