"Mmmm! Good soup! Thanks!", said the picky-eater 6-year old. :

I added 4 cups of diced potatoes when the carrots were added. (Also soaked the lentils overnight and drained the next morning and allowed to continue sprouting while at work. The thyme works nicely with the cumin, too. Great!

    Dear Ina,

I love this recipe so much that I'm able to do it in my sleep. I change every so often. If I don't have leeks, I'll use a couple of shallots, and when I want meat I use Chorizo, or Keilbasa. It's such a hearty meal. I really love it. In fact I think it's so good I made for my dear friend on her birthday. And thankfully she really enjoyed it.

I love watchin your show I learn so much from you. It's wonderful. Thank you so much for teaching me so many wonderful recipeces!!!

My family loved this - it made a wonderful dinner and a great way to use fresh, in season veggies. I threw mushrooms in also and it was a wonderful complement. Also, someone below said that they tried to make less because it makes a ton - don't - I froze the leftovers in quart containers to thaw out later for a quick dinner. I do that all the time with soup and its wonderful.

I love this soup. It is delicious. All of the flavors go so well together. The texture of the soup is thick & hearty. A very healthy and tasty soup. Makes a large amount. Which I am happy about since I feed a large family. I usually have to double or quadruple my soup recipes. I didn't have to here.

I loved it, my family loved it, my neighbors loved it. Follow the recipe and you won't be disappointed. I used vinegar (a family lentil soup tradition instead of the wine and it spiced it up just perfectly...and don't forget to top it with olive oil.
    YUM!

For one thing, the ingredients were off - :ie: two leeks don;t equal 3 cups. I ended up tossing the whole soup. Too bad as the French lentils were exepensive not to mention all the rest.

I'm sure you hear this thousands of times, but I am a big fan, and former New Yorker. I am a "foodie" and have been cooking since I was 12, and have also taken many classes over the years on a variety of foods. I have several of your cookbooks, and the most amazing thing I can say about your books is that, not one of your recipes has failed or been anything short of incredible, and they have a depth of flavor that never ceases to amaze anyone who tastes these dishes. I have also developed recipes of my own using yours for inspiration among others. You continue to keep me in a mind set to thoroughly enjoy cooking and baking, now that I'm retired, and I have been cooking for more years than I care to count, but it remains exciting in no small part due to you, your show, and your books! I cook at least 5 - 6 nights each week, and bake at least once each week, which my husband appreciates totally. My hat's off to you, and thank you again for helping me to keep this passion alive in my home.

This was my first time eating lentils. I bought a bag of plain lentils from the store before I had this recipe in mind so I just used them.
Be sure to let the soup simmer at least the hour recommended before eating. I found that I needed to cook it longer before I was satisfied with the doneness of the veggies and the consistency of the broth.
This is the best broth I've ever tasted and I will be putting cumin and thyme in every soup I make from now on. (This tasted even more AMAZING the next day!
