I made this as a test to see my family's reaction before Christmas. Overall it was a hit, but I honestly didn't like it. The chocolate part was delicious, however, the flan had a cheesecake taste to it and even though I like cheesecake, it's not something I wanted to taste in this. I still have a few more days until Christmas so I'll see what other recipe I use before then.

I was so excited to try this recipe, I tried it for the first time and it was a hit...even took it to a party.(I usually test first I told everyone about the recipe and the show only to discover that it was no longer on the air. WHY? The show was fun and had a lot of very interesting ideas and recipes which fills a void on the Food Network, something everyone loves MEXICAN cuisine.

I turn 49 yo tomorrow, and I made this yesterday for a triple b-day celebration today. I have been cooking steadily since the age of 19 or so....and this is one of the VERY BEST THINGS I have ever--EVER--made!!!

My only problem was that it didn't cook for an hour. It took a lot longer-- maybe 1 hr. 40 minutes. Maybe it's my oven...I don't know, but the thermometer registered an even 350°. No problem-- I'll just watch it carefully. All the adults had a 2nd piece, and my husband had a 3rd! I will make this over and over again...on its debut, it has already become a family favorite!
    ¡ MUCHISIMAS GRACIAS, MARCELA!

I made this for my Latin co-workers. They loved it. They beg for me to make it for every company potluck. My friend from Venezuela said it brought a tear to his eye because it reminded him of home. Just like his mom made when he was a child. I have made it about 10 times now. Most of the time it comes out perfect. The only time I had a problem was when I made it with bulgarian buttermilk instead of cultured buttermilk by mistake.

I'm making this for a fiesta themed party. I always make a test version of a new recipe and have my co-workers give me a thumbs up or thumbs down. This one received a unanimous two thumbs up. Even those who don't usually like flan said they would eat this again. I agree with some that did not care overly for the cake. I think the difference is whether it's room temp or chilled. When I tried a slice chilled, the cake wasn't my favorite. When I tried it room temp/warm, it was so much better. The two textures compliment each other nicely.

Cooking time note. My first version took two hours to cook. My second version took the stated one hour. The only change I made was to cook on regular bake instead of convection bake.

We thought this was better as just a Flan. The cake was a bit much, but the Flan excellent! Actually made the Flan part as our dessert for our Summer Party this year, and it was inhaled in no time flat!
