Tried this recipe again and it came out awesome. See my previous review. There is another recipe for this on Food Network and it is written correctly. That one has 5 stars. Only thing I would change and this is completely personal preference, is I would add sugar to the flan part. Cake part was very rich though...

The recipe is written wrong. The dry ingredient mixture does not include the cocoa. The wet ingredients do. Also the recipe instructions are not grammatically correct, so it is really hard to follow. As a result my attempt at this came out wrong. I will try it again though because I think it might come out right, once I re-write the instructions....

I have been looking forward to making this since I saw the recipe on TV. I followed the recipe exactly, with no substations. It was easy to follow and was visually very appealing, but the taste was pretty disappointing for the following reasons:
    - The ratio of chocolate cake to flan is way off - there is too much cake and not enough flan (about 3/4 cake and 1/4 flan
    - The chocolate cake was dense and moist, but not very chocolaty. I think a richer, deeper chocolate flavor in the cake would have provided a better flavor contrast with the flan.
    - The flan recipe was OK (my mom's is out of this world! flavor-wise, but the texture of the flan was not appealing. It was kind of a tofu-like texture instead of the usual silky custard flavor you would expect from a flan.

The recipe is awesome!!! This is my second time making it and I can surely say it came out better the second time. I baked it for 50 mins, I could see the diff of the flan and the density of the cake. Over all easy to make, can't wait to makenit again.

I wish there were more than 5 stars! This recipe is so easy and so delicious! I've made it for a family celebration and for a potluck lunch at work -- a hit both times and my mom has requested this for her birthday. Both times I made it I used reduced fat buttermilk and cream cheese and nonfat evaporated and condensed milks. Also, I was out of Triple Sec, so I added an extra teaspoon of tequila which gave it a wonderful "extra something" flavor. The cake is dense and moist and the custard layer is smooth and wonderful. If you love a rich chocolate cake, make this one!

I wasn't super impressed by this but I gave it 4 stars because everyone raved about when I brought it to a potluck.

I used Kahlua instead of tequila and triple sec. It turned out great! Tried to get it out of the pan too soon and some of the flan stuck, but other than than I was very pleased with how easy and incredibly good this recipe is! Next time I'll try not to be so impatient!

This cake is awesome! I made it after seeing it on her show. It was super easy to make...I didn't want to put the booze in so I put in 4 tbsp of brewed coffee instead. Also forgot to put the vanilla in the flan, but it still turned out great. I refrigerated the leftovers and I think the cake tastes great cold right from the fridge. I actually prefer it cold. Will definitely be making this again!
