This was a great soup! So delicious on a cold night. I could not find dried New Mexico chilis, so I substituted with a dried California chili. As the soup was simmering, it didn't have quite enough spice, so I added a few dashes of Garlic Tabasco sauce....it gave the soup a nice kick in the background. I also added shredded up leftover meat from a rotisserie chicken. I've always been a little afraid of frying at home, and these tortilla strips were my first experience. They were very easy and worth the effort. I garnished the soup with chopped cilantro, avocado, cheese, and the tortilla strips....it looked very gourmet when everything was assembled. To use up some of the extra corn tortillas....I cut them in triangles, fried them up and sprinkled them with sugar and cinnamon...then served those with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. I definitely recommend this dish!

I'm giving this recipe a 5 star review, even though I added and altered quite a bit. I made my own chicken broth and added the chicken to the soup. I did not make the tortilla strips, instead I made cilantro and jalapeno (Jiffy Mix corn bread muffins. The broth was a little flat, so I added approximately 2 teaspoons of cumin, 2 tsp. garlic powder, and 2 tsp. onion powdwer and a few dashes of chili powder. I was surprised there was no cilantro in this recipe, I included 2-3 tablespoons which was a delicious addition. For added flavor I added 3 tablespoons of chipotle salsa. Very very good with the avocado and cheese.I opted for reduced fat feta cheese crumbles. I would definitely make this again. Gracias Marcela!

I Can't get enough!! This recipe is awesome! I kept going back for more. Even right up till bed time I would sneak in the fridge for one more sip-a-aoup!
The only thing I did different was add some andouille sausgae and a little bit of diced chicken along with some fresh peppers! Other than that, this recipe is brilliant!! Muy delicioso

This soup was just fantastic and I know I will crave it again and again in future. Did everything exactly has written, except I used 3 seeded jalepenos instead of the dried chile beause I had them on hand, and vegetarian broth instead of chicken broth since I am vegetarian.
The flavors are just fantastic thanks to the roasted vegtables and garlic.
It was hard stopping at one bowl.
I agree with other reviewer that said the toppings make the soup. The tortilla strips, crema, and avocado are a must. I also added cilantro and a dash of lime at end.
I am really becoming a huge fan of Marcela!!! Cant wait for her cookbook.

I used this recipe as a base for a Chicken Tortilla Soup and my family asked for seconds. I boiled my chicken with oregano, garlic and salt and used the broth to blend the other ingredients with. I substituted a few roasted chile arbol for the serrano chile to add a little heat to my soup. I added more tortillas than the recipe called for to get a thicker consistency. I did not garnish with chipotle chiles but I did use cotija cheese(dry white cheese, avocados, limes and cilantro. I have since passed along the recipe to other members of my family and they are really excited to try it. As soon as this California heat dies down I plan to make it again!!!!!!!!

I fell in love with the Tortilla Soup when traveling in Cabo a few years back...had it at almost every meal. This is the first recipe that duplicates the incredible soups I had down there. I have been DVR'ing your show in hopes you would do one...
Only thing I did was add some cayanne pepper to heat it up a bit. I'm going to try to add some differetn peppers next time, like serrano. Thanks for the great recipe.
