This was so EASY to make. Everyone loved it, and my Tres Leches-loving boyfriend said it was the first he's tasted that's come so close to his Hispanic aunt's!
Unfortunately, it was my first Tres Leches, and I discovered that I'm just not a fan of such a sweet and fatty cake.
The cake puffs into this perfect sponge cake that isn't sweet and has just the right amount of lifts. I didn't have baking powder, so I subbed with 1/3 the amount of baking soda. I flipped, punched some holes, and doused the cake in the sauce. The cake ended up sitting for 2 days before it was served, and it had a great consistency that lasted until it was finished (3 days later.

Fantastic cake! I made it for my Hispanic husband and he decided I needed to bring one to Thankgiving at his families' house. They requested one for Christmas and now my sister-in-law wants her own at New Years to take to her friends in Austin!! You know if a house full of people orginally from Mexico like (love?? it, it is the real thing!

I made this cake for Thanksgiving dinner. It was DELICIOUS. I had tres leches cake in central Mexico years ago for the first time and I couldn't get it out of my mind. When I saw it in bakeries here in the US, I was so excited to have it agan, but was very disappointed. The cakes were all very, very soggy in the bottom and dry in the top 3/4ths of the cake.
This recipe turned out perfect. Just like I remembered. Thank you Marcella!

To be honest, I've never really been a fan of tres leches due to the sogginess factor... but my boyfriend requested it for his birthday this year, and this was the recipe we went with. The cake turned out FANTASTIC. Hands down, the best tres leches cake I have ever encountered [and possibly the best cake in general]. I can't say enough great things about this recipe. We were thrilled with the results.
We also never achieved "stiff peaks" which worried me initially, but it didn't seem to make a difference in the end result. So if this happens to you, don't fret! For us, the cake came out perfectly anyway.
Delicious!

This was so easy to make. I followed right along with the directions. My egg whites did not form "stiff" peaks, more like medium to soft peaks. I did not feel if I had beat any longer it would have made any difference. Everyone loved this. I had brought half the cake to my office, they loved it and samples were brought out back to our factory which is majority Mexican employees. They loved it as well. They have even asked me to make for them to buy.
