Same problem as someone else- I was using his holiday book recipe and the eggs/egg yolks are backwards! I could not understand why the dough was so dry! Thankfully came on here and figured it out.

Citrus Flavor was insanely delicious. But I have to say, they were not as crispy as I would like.

Just want to note that the recipe in Mario's Holiday Food Cookbook for Struffoli calls for 6 egg yolks and 1 egg. Wondering why my dough was a mess, I went on-line and found that it's 6 eggs and 1 yolk! Here's hoping my second attempt is better.

Being a transplanted NYer, living in North Carolina and not having any luck finding an Italian bakery, I decided to try these for Christmas. Well, following the recipe almost exactly, they came out fantastic. Brought them to relatives living close by and also not having any luck on the bakery front, they were a smash. Had to make the balls a little smaller cause they really do plump up and making sure the oil doesn't get too hot (they tend to pop out a little and lose their shape. Colored sugar instead of powered sugar and that was it. Very easy and very satisfying, especially if it's been years since you've had them.

Better than Mom made. These are great, especially the citrus flavor, which my mother's struffoli does not have. The recipe is very helpful since it provides temperatures, which my mom's doesn't. I made the doughballs a little too big, but now I know for next time.
Since these have no butter (or soy, ugh, they are a fantastic dessert option for my multiple-food-allergic toddler...she loves them! I have used lemon extract instead of the limoncello and that works very well.

This is the 2nd Year in a row I have made this recipe and they came out GREAT. Will continue to make them every year. Dough is sticky, used flour on my hands and had NO problems rolling the ropes.

My Mom and I just finished making a batch of these
struffoli for the first time and they came out delicious!
We usually use my grandmother's recipe, but decided
to try Mario's this time, and are glad we did.

the recipe makes enough for us and to share and the honey balls poof up nicer than I have been used to. The flavor is also delicate and not heavy.

    good recipe!
