these were a LOT of work and came out quite bland; we had to use a spicy tomato-based sauce to perk up the flavor

This recipe is wonderful. You can do it ahead of time, or serve right after cooling. It makes a wonderful summer supper or first course. Contrasting flavors and textures make it a keeper.
