While I had to pause at the amount of meat that was to feed 4 adults could we not all agree that her plate was full? Perhaps the greatest gift Melissa gives us is a more realistic portion size for our food. Americans are either the fattest or close to the fattest in the world. Everyone who travels overseas (especially to France comment on how thin the people are in comparison to Americans and how small the portions served. She has done what my dietitian recommended, 2/3s of the plate filled with veggies, 1/3 with meat. Also remember that to meet the $10 requirement, having a big hunking burger isn't going to happen.
I would also like to see a 2nd show that would let Melissa expand her recipes to more of what we saw during the NFNS. I liked the idea of her approachable "French" inspired dishes that she would pull out of her hat.
And I know this comment is outside of the recipe for the most part, but it needs to be said.

I have printed many receipes from FN, Melissa is the only chef I have a notebook devoted to. This is another recipe I will be adding to my every growing binder. Please FN, don't limit her to just $10 meals. Although, the concept is timely, I would love to see more of what this chef can offer. She is a very good teacher. Take the $10 handcuffs off.

I agree with some of the other reviewers. I will probably try this recipe but Food Network needs to expand her show past the $ 10 restrictions. If I recall, her "culinary point of view" wasn't just about saving money (although that was part of her image since she has to stretch her budget but mostly about all the tips she provides. She can probably teach us a lot of tips with other ingredients and still save us money, but all those things she made on the Next Food Network Star were not limited by budget. She seems to be very creative and more people would be likely to watch if they would give her more room to grow. I do NOT watch Sandra's Semi Homemade, anybody can figure out it's usually easier to use a jar of store bought mayonnaise than to take time to make your own. We want to learn good recipes and techniques!! Maybe the Food Network can allocate Melissa $ 20 next season!

This is a good, although fairly basic, recipe. I would suggest adding more flavor to the burgers (I usually mix Worcestershire sauce and ketchup in with the raw beef, in addition to garlic powder, but the black beans are a fun new twist! Unfortunately, there is no way this would feed 4 people - even for sliders, it's hard to make 8 burgers with only 1/2 pound of meat and 1/4 cup of beans!

This was great, I had EVERYTHING. Well, the black beans were for a salad! Oh well, what flavor and they were moist. I bet your family never wants to eat out, not when they have a cook like you.
I do wish Food Network would have a show, or special, where you could "do your thing" with no $ limit. You blew everyone away on the Next Star contest. On I don't want you to stop the $10 meals, they are super and really help me, pls at my age, you have taught me alot.
How about a Thanksgiving with Melissa and a Christmas with Melissa. You would, of course, have all your time and money saving tips. Sounds great to me.

This looked delicious and I've put it on the menu for later this week. Love black beans, love sliders-- this looks like a winner to me.
But PLEASE, FN, stop trapping Melissa in this 10 dollar straitjacket. Let her just cook, just give recipes she loves, just be herself without the obsession with budget. The other NFNS winners have shows where they can showcase their cooking, not their budgetary skills. Give Melissa that same chance!
