I made a few substitutions because of what I had on hand but it still was amazing! Cole slaw mix instead of red cabbage, and 1/3 balsamic with 2/3 regular white vinegar in place of the red wine vinegar. It was extra delicious served along the L'orange chicken from the same episode. Slaw lovers must try.

I made this slaw for a BBQ party, and I don't usually make new recipes for parties. Everyone thought it was delicious. The bacon was a nice compliment/contrast. Since I didn't really measure the veggies, I did add a little more of the dressing and I sweetened the dressing just a tad. I thought that currants and/or sunflower seeds might jazz this up a bit, but I did not do it this time. As it was, the slaw was light and delicious. The fennel was subtle, and the cut-up fronds reminded one of dill, without the potent flavor. This was a delicate surptise! Melissa -- we watched you progress through the challenges, and we now are very impressed with your show. You've got the previous champs beat hands-down. Keep it up! Thanks

OMG I loved this dish! I watched Melissa on FNS and loved her then, and still love her now, she is a wonder to food, I have never had fennel till now, and everyone in my house went nuts over it, just the little touch of bacon was so refreshing, I made it 2 hrs in advance and chilled it, was so yummy!

I havent found a slaw I actually like. I made this on a lark for my husband and finally gave in to the harassment to try it. I LOVED it! I am actually making it again and will forever use this recipe!

This is my favorite slaw of all time! I love fennel, but it is generally pricey in my area at $4-5 each and never goes on sale, but I make it because it is so good, although I am going to try to grow some in the garden this year.

I loved this slaw! Never had used fennel before, so it was new to me. I also added a couple extra slices of bacon. I will make this again and again. I might try a couple different versions just for fun too....like adding some sliced granny smith apples and substituting apple cider vinegar for the red wine vinegar. For the negative reviewers: why are you even watching the show if you don't like her or her recipes? And why bother writing a review or trying her recipes? Nothing better to do??

OMG! This is the single most tasty slaw I have ever eaten!
The recipe calls for 1 c of purple cabbage...I didn't have that and I needed more slaw than that so I improvised. I used half a head of green cabbage and doubled everything else but the fennel. I was scared to add the extra fennel because I am trying to get my hubbie to like fennel.
Anyway--it is delicious and I think it is the dressing along with the bacon that really makes it a winner for me. The fennel adds a freshness but is not obvious so my husband will never even know it is in there and I'm certainly not telling him. :

Couldn't taste the fennel at all. This just tasted like regular coleslaw...nothing special at all.

I loved Melissa's summation of the recipe's cost components. She said " I can't believe you can cook all this chicken for only $5, and the slaw for under $4, and the crispy potatoes for a dollar!" Yeah Melissa, neither can I.
Try pricing fennel at the supermarket. Melissa says while not a traditionally budget item, it's not really expensive, though it doesn't really ever go on sale. Not expensive? Usually around $2.99 per lb. And you can't buy the 3/4 pound bulb without another pound of attached fronds, so that bunch she showed was over $5 all by itself. 5 bucks for the fennel, another 80 cents for red cabbage, mayo, scallions, and vinegar. 4 bucks, no way!

Fantastic!!! I was skeptical because I'm not a big fan of coleslaw but I thought I'd give it a try anyway. I loved it! I too added an additional 2 strips of bacon to the recipe, so tasty! I highly recommend it. I will make this on a weekly/monthly basis (minus the extra bacon, ha!, so delicious and light. Thanks to another "foody" below, I found the fennel easily because it also goes by the name of Anise.
