Couldn't taste the fennel at all. This just tasted like regular coleslaw...nothing special at all.

I loved Melissa's summation of the recipe's cost components. She said " I can't believe you can cook all this chicken for only $5, and the slaw for under $4, and the crispy potatoes for a dollar!" Yeah Melissa, neither can I.

Try pricing fennel at the supermarket. Melissa says while not a traditionally budget item, it's not really expensive, though it doesn't really ever go on sale. Not expensive? Usually around $2.99 per lb. And you can't buy the 3/4 pound bulb without another pound of attached fronds, so that bunch she showed was over $5 all by itself. 5 bucks for the fennel, another 80 cents for red cabbage, mayo, scallions, and vinegar. 4 bucks, no way!

Fantastic!!! I was skeptical because I'm not a big fan of coleslaw but I thought I'd give it a try anyway. I loved it! I too added an additional 2 strips of bacon to the recipe, so tasty! I highly recommend it. I will make this on a weekly/monthly basis (minus the extra bacon, ha!, so delicious and light. Thanks to another "foody" below, I found the fennel easily because it also goes by the name of Anise.

This was fantastic. It was a different, lighter, and perfect slaw! We'll certainly be making this again. What a perfect summer side!

I LOVE this recipe! I have made it three times now and everyone always asks for this recipe. I added 4 strips of bacon instead of two (you can never have too much bacon! but otherwise, GREAT RECIPE!

I'm not a huge fan of coleslaw, but I love fennel, so I thought I'd try this one out. I'm so glad I did. It was good! I didn't have bacon, but we had shredded pork with it anyhow, so I just put it on top of a bbq sandwich. Yummy :

I substitute most of the sugar with splenda and some of the mayo with zero-fat greek yogurt and it tastes the SAME. i love this salad--don't skimp on the bacon, it makes a difference!

To Maryellen from OR. Here is a hint: if your local grocery store has never heard of fennel, then I suggest you find another store. Its probable that they probably never heard of pears or carrots, either. Regarding the slaw...this was great. The Mayo and red wine vinegar worked well together and the anise-flavor of the fennel paired well with the cabbage.

I love this coleslaw. I added a little more bacon, and next time I make it I will add a splash of chili sauce. It will give it a tiny bit of pizzazz. Or if you like it sweeter, add a bit more sugar.

My sister and I made this when I was visiting. From shopping for the ingredients to making the slaw was a blast. We decided to decrease the fat in our diet, so we substituted dried cranberries, 1/2 of a sliced apple and light mayo for the bacon and full fat mayo. What can I say but that it was delicious.
I have tried recipes from the show and have been pleased each time, keep them coming
