This is a wonderful french onion soup bursting with flavor. I did choose to use homemade chicken stock which made a difference. The onions took a long time but it was so worth it. Even better the next day!

Very good and so easy to do. Taste like the french onion soup I had in France.

Made this tonight. Followed the directions and the onions got nice and brown as they should have pretty quickly. Used cream sherry as I had no red wine, thought it turned out great. With a nice big salad this was perfect for this horribly cold night. Thanks!

The length of time it took for carmelizing the onions was definitely misrepresented, but easily fixed when I cranked up the heat after the hour was done. I wrote the recipe down as I watched and should have gotten on line for more accurate measurements. Leaving the grocery store $40 dollars later made me really question the $10 dollar dinner theory. I have not ever cooked with red wine (my own inexperience and I should never have chosen a merlot. Overpowered the soups flavor. With some minor tweeking I think this will become my signature soup. Thanks for the starting point Melissa.

I followed the directions exactly and used good wine. The onions took forever, and I felt the flavor of the soup was still a bit bland by the end. That said, I like a really full-bodied french onion soup, so maybe I am too particular. Anyway, not for me, but others seem to like it.

This turned out great! I have tried French Onion Soup recipes in the past that came out horrible. This one tops them all! I was a little concerned about the onions caramelizing, but if you wait the full 1.5 hours, they will be very brown and tasty. The only thing I did differently was I added a couple of cloves of garlic since we are garlic lovers. I will be making this again and again!

I have probably only made french onion soup a half dozen times, each time trying a different recipe. This recipe is BY FAR the best! and I will be making it again!!
