These potatoes are a bit more work than the frozen, bagged potatoes, but if you are looking to do something a little more special for your family, they are worth it. Yum. Crispy!

Made these the other night with the Chicken l'orange and a braised cabbage of hers.

They were good, but didn't get golden crispy all around like hers. They were kind of crispy on one side, but not the other sides. Still, they were fluffy inside and had good flavor.

I used much less oil than she did in the original, and I sauteed minced onion and garlic with mine and added lots of fresh chopped thyme to them. Steaming did boost the cooking process before putting them in the oven.

    I would make them again.

I had the same problem as Mark 3/21/10 post. Mine only turned golden on one side while in the oven. I too cooked them longer than recommended hoping they'd brown a little more...about 40 minutes in the oven. Didn't work. Did I do something wrong??? Definitely add some herbs to your liking b/c it's too plain w/just salt & pepper and definitely be liberal w/the salt & pepper. If I can figure out how to get them to crisp up on all sides in the oven, then this is definitely a convenient (you just need potatoes, which most of us always have on hand!, easy side dish to have at the ready. Love Melissa's helpful tips!

Melissa, I just made your Crispy Potatoes for dinner & they were PERFECT!!
I followed your easy recipe & the key is constantly stirring them, especially after adding the water. I set my stove timer for one minute at a time & thats when I would stir them. I placed them on a baking sheet & used parchment paper (easy clean up from the oven. My husband LOVED them too & yes they were brown on the outside & fluffy on the inside. They really complimented the Crispy Orange Chicken that I made from your show. Thanks two great dinner ideas that I sure will make again & again.

Yeh, Merv - Get a life!. No I never did hear of Mise En Place! If your such an expert why don't you have a show. Perhaps you should go through the paces to become a food network star. But obviously a star you're NOT. Yes, for anyone who cooks regularly, and for a family, buying regularly and on sale makes a lot of sense. If your trying to cheap out on your once a week night to cook this probably won't work for you. Maybe you should take your $10.00 and go out to eat -for 4. These potatoes were excellent - yeh all FOUR of them. Herbs are a great idea. Melissa you're the best. Enjoy your tips and your show. Your budget meals are great! Try them ya'all - you can't go wrong.

Steaming step was a great little tip. Potatoes came out fluffy on the inside and crispy on the outside. I added a little herb blend to the butter. The family really enjoys this recipe. To Shelley, Dallas - don't waste your time on Margaret (she's the former "NULL" of the AMATEUR, AMATEUR, AMATEUR rants in prior recipe comments FN deleted those so she now posts as Margaret from San Antonio.

My potatoes stuck to the pan, also they were greasy. Obviously I did something wrong, but the potatoes I was able to pry from the skillet and put into the oven were tasty. I'll use a non-stick skillet next time. I think Melissa is doing a great job on her show. I'd still like to see Jeffrey Saad with his own show!

Ok so I fallowed the directons exactly, but didnt get the same results. I didnt add that much veg oil and yet it didnt absorb or anything. I added 3 tablespoons of water and created the steam then covered it as instructed, that seemed to work out ok. After that I tossed in the butter and coated the potatoes. Put them on a baking sheet and baked them for 20 min. They didnt get golden brown like you showed, i actually cooked them for even longer in order to make them crispy but i didnt get the golden look that you had. I had to put my own twist on seasoning them with some crazy salt to make them good.

What did i do wrong, and why didnt they turn golden. more butter next time??

Simple way to prepare potatoes with lots of flavor. The steps were easy to follow & produced great crispy texture along with yummy flavor Sometimes when I oven roast potatoes they are crispy & flavorful but kind of dry inside. This recipe solved that problem for me & I make these a few times a month now. To "margaret": yes it's an easy recipe....if you don't like easy recipes you don't have to prepare them. Many of us like Melissa's new ideas & simple twists on old stand-by preparations. You don't have to watch her show. Please try making the recipe before rating it! To "merv": This recipe has more than 240 ratings at this point. The star rating posted by FN indicates that the overall average of all 240+ ratings is closer to 5 stars than 4 stars, not that 100% of the ratings are 5 stars. FN doesn't assign half or partial stars . I can't believe someone actually went through all 240+ ratings to count how many WEREN'T 5 stars ratings! The whole idea of Melissa's show is to demonstrate to the viewer how to produce flavorful meals less expensively. Not all of us go into grocery stores & pay the regular price for everything.....it just doesn't make sense to us. If you don't shop that way that's fine with me.....but please don't rag on Melissa because she points out ways to save money. I thought I knew every trick in the book to save money at the store but I've picked up a few new ideas from Melissa & I appreciate her tips. There are other FN hosts I don't like so I don't watch their shows & don't use the recipe reviews to criticize them. That's what TV remotes are for, just switch the channel & switch back when someone you enjoy watching is on! FN has each day's schedule on this site so it's easy to avoid any shows or hosts you don't appreciate. THANKS MELISSA!
