I was not sure that I should give this a 5, because I didn't care for it BUT my whole family thought it was very good. I had to double the recipe so maybe I lost something in the doubling. Her Suclulent (sp Braised Pork is SOOOOOOO much better.

I'd seen this recipe on TV and when I looked it up the reviews were so good I figured this was probaby a "keeper". I printed it out in the 3 x 5 recipe card layout only to find (when I was at the end of the recipe that the instuctions never told me to add the beer or the prunes. Oh, and the ingredient list did not include the beef broth!! Despite my last minute dashing around, it came out very well.

Do yourself a favor and print out the long version, transfering it to a recipe card by hand!!

This is so simple and so good. I used what I had on hand, i.e., thick cut bacon and dried currants, also regular beer. The depth of flavor was surprising. I just love Melissa's recipes, thanks!

We aren't drinkers, so we don't have beer in the house. On the other hand, I do love ginger ale. In place of the beer, I used a product called Cap'n Eli's Ginger Beer bottled by Shipyard Brewing company in Portland, Maine. Excellent in this recipe... but we love Melissa's recipes!

I made this for supper last night and it was great. My husband really enjoyed it and he can sometimes be a picky eater. It was moist, flavorful and very tender. I did have to add about an hour to the oven cooking time but this could be because I did increase the portion size of some of the ingredients. I served this over rice. The gravy this made was exceptional. Although this was not a hard recipe to make I thought it was labor intensive but I would definitely make this again.

Made this last weekend and it was very good. Since I dislike onions, I used a few dried onion bits (a little onion flavor is OK by me, just not a lot, and substituted in some fresh garlic instead of caramelizing the onions. Otherwise, I made it just as written (well, except I had almost 2 pounds of beef and adjusted all the quantities used to match.

It did come out a bit too greasy - next time I will leave out the vegetable oil, as the rendered bacon fat seemed to be quite sufficient for the task. I agree with those who say it was a bit too salty, too. The bacon adds adequate salt without adding any to the meat itself. I'd also chop the prunes before adding, just to distribute the taste more and encourage breakdown.

All in all, though, it was still very good when made almost just as written. I see a number of comments on using cola instead of beer, and I'll probably try that next time. Sounds delicious!

One half pound bacon? sounds good on paper, but in reality it is nothing but salt. I omitted quite a bit of additional salt and still found this inedible. My man insisted I follow the recipe even though I can cook-- and then complained about the salt.
Cooks-- skip the bacon and add 2tbs worchestershire.

This was excellent! The family loved it! Easy to make. I didn't have a dutch oven, but used my big, covered casserole dish, and it still came out fine. The only thing that took a while was cooking the onions done, but it was well worth the wait! YUMMYYYYY!

I doubled the recipe, using extra lean large chunck stew meat that was on sale. I also used baby cut carrots, which I keep on hand for the kids. I keep prunes for snacking so I didn't have to buy those either. Money was not a problem. With three kids and a husband that takes a lunch to work, we had plenty and left overs for later. Everyone liked the meal and said they would like it with mushrooms next time.

Made this for dinner last night and everyone loved it! It came out perfect, I also used Coke instead of beer, and it was delicious. I added Yukon Gold potatoes to the recipe to make it a little more filling (3 medium sized, peeled and cubed added just before being put into the oven and it turned out perfect. My children are some of the most picky kids on the planet, and they loved it! My husband loved the bacon flavor and said that I had to write a review and let everyone know how amazing this recipe is, we are definitely adding this one to the recipe box.
