The recipe was excellent, I did use a belgium beer which was very expensive, but worth it, as they say good to the last bite.Definetly will make again, a great comfort food.

Saw this today and was lucky enough to have on hand leftover French Onion Soup my hubby made yesterday so I was able to put this together very quickly. Love it when I can do a 're-make' from leftovers.
Used Stella Artois beer and the suggested prunes. Just tasted the broth and it is very good! Now I'm waiting for the cornbread to be done to sop up all that good gravy! Will do this again.

As this is titled comments and reviews, I just have a comment. Sue from Lakewood touched my heart. I grew up dirt poor, but I was strong enough to make it in this world. Very sucessful now. Sue I wish I could I buy you 25 llbs of beef.
Thank you for your honesty in telling us all how you adapted this recipe to fit your budget.
In fact I think I will try your version, as I love beans of any kind. I plan on making this next Saturday. Ok maybe half beans and half beef!
Thank you Melissa for all your recipes no matter what they cost. Growing up poor, I still do what you do, and look for items on sale and stock up. Maybe that is why I own two freezers! it does take time, but look at all the ads in the paper or online. Online offers coupons that you may not even be aware about.

Amy, try a NA beer such as Busch NA, it has very, very little alcohol in it. and what little it dos have will cook out.
Another good substitute for beer would be a can of coke, it willl tenderize the meat and give it a great flavor,

By the way, excellent dish and very easy to make.

I hate to state the obvious but ... don't any of the "can't cost $10" complainers ever hear Melissa say "BUY WHEN IT'S ON SALE"? No one says that you have to make the recipe the week it is shown. Our regional chain supermarket had red skinned potatoes on sale this week for 79 cents/lb. Using 1 3/4 lbs that would be $1.39. Duh; that would do for the $1.50 cost she stated. I buy ine at Costco in a 10 lb bag for around $5. All that not withstanding, I have made quite a few of Melissa's recipes and hubby and I have enjoyed them all. We have enjoyed the salmon cakes several times (canned salmon is one of the things I will go to Walmart for and enjoyed them more than the the salmon burgers that we bought at Whole Foods. I am giving today's recipe a 5-star rating even before making it. Pot roast is my go-to recipe in the winter and I can tell a good pot roast or stew recipe without having to make it. I will try this one ... when the meat is on sale. Thanks Melissa; always enjoy your show and tips.

I have not tried the recipe but the ingredients are basic enough that it should rate at least a 4. I'm sorry in advance for using this to comment instead of reveiwing but Sue from Lakewood, CA., I just must. No shame in being on a budget, just keep your kids feed, but if your husband can't put down the newspaper long enough to have dinner with his family he doesn't deserve more then lard and beans. If you didn't have meat I also hope you didn't have the b eer. You didn't mention that.

Come on, give Melissa a break. It obviously wasn't her idea to have a show called 10 dollar dinners, that was Food Network. It's a dumb name and since prices vary from state to state so much its ridiculous to assume everyone could pull off the same recipe for the same cost. That being said, I watched her win and rooted for her. This lady can cook! I ignore the prices she gives and just concentrate on what she makes. Occasionally, I do use her suggestions and save a buck or two, but mostly I just enjoy her food. It's very similar to Ina Gartens, classic, easy and slightly French. Love it!

Melissa's recipes are good, but why they call her show "Ten Dollar Dinners" is beyond me. The only way you can make these recipes for $10 is if you already have 99% of the ingredients on hand. The boiled potatoes from this episode were said to cost under $1.50. Where do you buy your potatoes? Even at the farmer's market, red potatoes cost more than that. Keep giving us the good recipes, but let's be honest about the cost.

This looks delicious! We got home in time to see just the end of the show; so maybe you already addressed this and we missed it -- but what would be a good non-alcoholic substitute for the beer? We really want to make this but don't do alcohol. Thanks!!

This recipe was just the best, Melissa! My family raved over it and rubbed their tummies afterward. Times are a little tight right now, so I didn't have any slab bacon on hand for the lardons, so I just substituted real lard instead. Very flavorful! And likewise I couldn't afford the beef this week, so I just substituted a pound and a half of white beans, marinated overnight with a couple of dissolved boullion cubes. My kids couldn't tell the difference, and my husband barely looked up from his evening paper. Thank you Melissa for these wonderful tasting and thrifty recipes. God bless you! Sue
